Natural Birth

WWYD... need advice UPDATE birth story

SO we had a super wonderful birth story-

We got to the hospital around 9ish, got checked in and I was contracting but not regularly so she checked me and I was 5cm (same as at my appt that morning) so we walked the halls, rocked and bounced on the ball, etc... Got checked again at 10pm and had progressed to a stretched 6cm. Kept up the walking and slow laboring trying to figure out if my body is going to get into gear. Around 12pm I got checked again and was STILL a 6 (same thing happened with my last birth) so we decided to break my water which was the plan from the get go but I LOVE that my midwife gave me time to walk and labor before breaking my water.

Well as soon as my water was broken things went fast and furious. An hour later I was 8.5 cm, and another hour later I was pushing. 5 GOOD pushes and Lillian Abigail was born. 7lbs 3oz, 18.75 inches long and PERFECT!

My mifewife was AMAZING helping my husband help me thru each ctx durring transition and was able to expertly navigate her head thru the "ring of fire" so I didn't tear AT ALL.

I feel AMAZING! No tearing, no stiches, no pain. I feel 100% aside from a bit tired.

Anyway good luck to all us natural birth mammas- I def didn't follow my original plan of laboring at home as long as possible but in the end it was the PERFECT labor and I wouldn't change a thing :)

So here's my situation. This is my 3rd pg (4th child since 1st pg was twins). My first was a c-section b/c baby A was breech. Delivery was pretty straight forward, water broke, went to hospital had section.

2nd pg I had a med-free VBAC which was awesome. Midwife stripped my membranes at my 38 week appt and I was in labor 24 hours later. Labored at home for about 5 hours before going to hospital and was 6cm. Stalled at 6/7cm for a few hours when they broke my water and a few hours later he was born'

Now Im 37 weeks with my 3rd pg and I have been in early labor for A WEEK. Was up ALL night last night with ctx 2-3 min apart but never SO intense that I felt we shoould go to the hospital. I also had lots of bloody show and direah.

Went to midwife this morning and I am 5cm dilated, 100% effaced and baby is 0 almost +1 station. She said I could continue to labor slowly like this for days-weeks OR I could come in tonight and she'll break my water.

Now my goal of course is a med-free birth and so the idea of an early intervention scares me BUT the idea of no sleep and constant ctx that hurt doesn't appeal to me either especially with twin 4 year olds and a 2.5 year old to take care of.

In addition the past 2 weeks I have lost 4 lbs (only gained about 15 lbs this pg and I was at a healthy weight to begin with) and my fundal height measured 34cm on Fri and only 30cm today. No alot of that is probably b/c her head is so low but they are also a bit worried abut IUGR.

Would LOVE to hear opinions from other natural birth mommas on what they would do.

ps. I am having painful ctx (that I have to stop and focus through) all throughout the day but not in a consistent pattern. THey usually pick up in the evenings and become closer together--

  • I personally cant imagine having to watch my other children and stop to focus through contractions. I would say go in and have her break your water. You will be really upset if you wait for days/weeks and then not end up with what you want anyway after going through all that stress and pain. Plus who knows maybe she will jumpstart you and you will progress on your own! Good Luck!

  • I absolutely understand wanting to go intervention free. Personally I plan to wait for my waters to break on their own (or not at all). In your circumstances however, I think I would be very open to letting your MW break my waters. It sounds like it may be the little tiny push that your body needs to get things really rolling.

GL, hopefully you'll have your new baby in your arms shortly!

  • Maybe you and your hubby could spend a little time together ;) I know that is how I ended up going into labor and then having my water break. From the sounds of it, you'll be having a late night delivery :/ Good luck!
