Ouch! Biting while nursing

LO has always been a distracted nurser and bites down and rips off.  Now that she has 2 razor sharp little teeth, I think she might amputate my nipple.  Yesterday she even drew blood.  Every time it happens, I taker her off and tell her, No I don't like that.   She thinks its hilarious.  Clearly she is not getting the message.  Any advice?

Re: Ouch! Biting while nursing

  • Chase just bit me for the first time over lunch today.  We're doing BLW, so he's learning to chew.  When I was nursing him today, he wasn't very hungry so he started chewing on my nipple.  OUCH!  I did the same thing you did and he stopped and eventually nursed normally.  I know this probably isn't much help, but I sympathize.

  • Liam's teeth aren't in yet, but I've read to praise for good nursing. Maybe "operant conditioning" of praising for good nursing will work along with taking your LOs off the nipple when they do bite? Someone/somewhere said to even put them on the floor or a few steps away when they bite so they feel like they did something.

I just heard when they're nursing nicely to pet their arms or stroke their head and praise them. "That's good. Nice nursing," etc.

Like I said, Liam's teeth aren't in yet, so I've just been reading up online and in The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding and the breastfeeding board here.
