when did your milk come in?

I'm 5 days post, and while my boobs are getting bigger by the minute, no real milk yet. I feel like my poor girl is do hungry. My doc said that sometimes it takes longer post cs because of what your body has been through. Just looking for an average.

Re: when did your milk come in?

  • With DS1 it took 4 days and the LC had my pumping 5 minutes before each nursing session to try to help get my milk to come in since ds1 was 9lb 12oz and she was trying to help me not have to supplement (not that I was against it). With DS2 my milk came in full force at 4am on day 3. I had to get dh up and go get ds2 from the nursery so I could nurse him. Hang in there!

  • I'm pretty sure it was five days for me - definitely after I was discharged.  DD was close to her birthweight when we left the hospital and six ounces above by the time she was a week old, so she was doing just fine on colostrum.

  • Mine came in day 3 or 4 with each child.

  • Mine came in at Day 5 or 6 and that was with pumping before & after trying to nurse him each time.  I thought it was never going to happen!  Hang in there!

FTR, we did supplement with a tiny bit of formula if he was hungry after trying to nurse and it never "messed" anything up; he BF'd for about 18 months.

  • I had DD on a Tuesday at noon and my milk came in that Friday morning
  • I think, alhtough I am no expert, that it depends on if you went into natural labor before your c/s or not. It makes sense that it could take longer if you had a scheduled c/s and your body wasn't prepared yet. I went into labor naturally with DS, had a c/s because he was breech, and he had my milk in within 48 hours of his birth. The LCs at the hospital called him a chow hound!!

  • My milk came in day 3 but they had me pumping after each breastfeeding session to help things along.

This exactly.  It was really frustrating and alot of hard work.  They say eating oatmeal helps with milk production and I ate it everyday.  We had to supplement with formula until my milk came in.

  • C/S is a trauma on your body and that's why it takes longer.  I had DD Friday night at almost midnight and my milk came in on Monday.  But she was a NICU baby and they had me pumping the day after she was born because they thought she would be syringe fed for a while.  They do survive on what they already have in their system and your colustrum for a few days.

  • DD was born Saturdaynight and by the time I was discharged  on Tuesday I know I was starting to get my milk (the LC told me). I didn't feel engorged until the next morning though. Hang in there. Newborn tummies are tiny.
