Birthday Party Date Poll

My older son's birthday is 12/27, a Tuesday this year. In the past we've had his birthday party the first or second weekend in January, but I'm thinking maybe we'll do it on his actual birthday this year.

Pros to doing it on his birthday: just one celebration (past years we've done small family birthday party on his actual bday, then bigger friends party later), location cheaper on a weekday, most family and close friends are local and do not travel over the holidays, a lot of people have time off between Christmas and New Years

Cons: 2 days after Christmas, people more likely be traveling or have other commitments, some people may have to work

Re: Birthday Party Date Poll

  • I'm not going to vote because I have no idea, but I'm posting to offer sympathy.  As a 12/27er myself, I can tell you I've done all of the above and also chosen "none."  When I was M's age, my parents celebrated my birthday before Xmas with my older brother (12/20), on a weekend of their chosing.  Later, we had group parties for all three of us (bro #2 is 12/22) on a weekend before Xmas vacation.  I had my 7th and 13th birthday parties on my actual birthday but they were a bit sparsely attended.  The only people who agree to celebrate on the actual day are my husband and parents and only then if someone isn't sick (which is less likely than you'd hope). :)  As an adult, I sometimes fold it into a NY day open house which works well.

    Good luck deciding!

  • What about the 30th? people should be back home by then, it's not actually NYE yet and still a week day :)

  • I say go for it - have it on his actual b-day, especially if you think most of your friends will be in town.  I know we are always in town over Christmas and would love something fun like a b-day party to occur during the week between Christmas and New Years!
  • I voted for New Year's Eve Day. I think it depends on how many of his school friends you think would want to come.  Personally I wouldn't want to go to something 2 days after Christmas, I'm beat after Christmas.  I would enjoy an excuse to do something on NYE though because now that we have kids (who am I kidding I haven't been out since I was 22) we stay home, go to bed around 10 and are basically boring old people now Wink, a party would liven up my NYE life for sure!
