VBAC

'big baby' predictions and vbacs?

I had been with a MFM for some potential problems but was recently released from their care. At my last appt with them (at 28w), they did an u/s which had LO measuring in the 97%. I know estimates can be quite off on later growth scans, but I'm wondering if having a potential large baby will hamper my VBAC attempts.

DS was 8lb 6oz but he was 11 days overdue. C/s as a result of failure to progress after induction.

So I guess I'm looking for stories of positive VBAC outcomes with large babies. Thanks!

Re: 'big baby' predictions and vbacs?

  • 9lb 1oz VBAC baby, here! I don't think that is that big... I expected him to be bigger!

I'm a big believer that your body won't make a baby that is too big for you to push out (assuming you're healthy and don't have GD or something like that). Getting over the "big baby" fear was a HUGE struggle of mine.

    You can do it!

  • My VBAC baby wasn't big, he was only 7lbs 2oz, so actually on the small size.  But the whole time I was pregnant and even the day before I had him, they kept warning me that my VBAC could fail because he was measuring big (not by u/s, but I was measuring a few weeks ahead)  Even the day before I went into labor my OB said "that's a big baby in there"  Yeah...not so much.  It just goes to show you that you can't trust all that stuff.  I wouldn't let any predictions stop you from trying!
  • My friend had a c-section with her first (10 pounds) after labour stalled at 7 cms. She had a vbac with her second (11 pounds), and was only in labour for 4 hours and pushed for 10 minutes.

  • I had a VBAC with a 10lb 10oz baby. I had refused any late u/s. He was around 41.5-42 weeks when he was born, so he was pretty late. DS1 was 8lb 4oz and 10 days late...

28 weeks seems insanely early to be predicting baby size. Are you sure of your EDD? I know DS2 was measuring ahead at 20ish weeks, which pushed my due date back, but I think it was bc he was so huge (he was 23.5" long also).

The best course of action with suspected macrosomia is to go into labor on your own and stay upright and active. hth and good luck!

    DS2 - Oct 2010 (my VBAC baby!)

  • I think there is a HUGE growth spurt around 28 weeks because both my babies were measuring on the upper ends around then. It just depends on where/when they get measured. The nurse told me these measurements can be as much as a pound off.  DS was measuring two weeks ahead around 28 weeks I think, but either that was waaaay off or his growth rate slowed down. I was freaking out too and worrying about the vbac attempt.

Anyway, you know my story-- I had a successful vbac with DS (39 weeks exactly ) who ended up at "only" 8 lbs, 1 oz--3 oz less than my OP c/s DD. I'm petite at 5'2" but DH is 6'2" so both my babies seem big to me.

5 days before DS was born, they had measured him at 8 lbs 1 oz oddly enough, but his tummy was huge that morning and both the nurse and I suspected that was throwing the computers guesstimation off.  I wouldn't read too much into the growth scan just yet. :)

  • I just wanted to say that my LO's growth u/s showed a 3lb weight gain from 30wks-34wks...the drs were freaked out and double checked that I didn't have GD.  Then at my 37wk u/s the LO's size was 7lbs-4oz (meaning it had slowed down to a normal 1/2lb per week growth).  I think LO just went through a growth spurt earlier (my sister said the same thing happened with her babies around that time).

  • Thanks for all the positive stories everyone. I know a lot can change in the next 10+ weeks so I'm going to keep thinking that I can VBAC

I'm sure of my EDD. Although I wasn't temping, I was using OPKs and only had sex 2 days in that month (both around ovulation time). And my early u/s all matched up with my EDD.

  • Another 9lb 5 ounce VBAC baby here with a 1 degree tear, it wasn't difficult at all!
  • Had an 8lb 13oz VBAC.
