Adoption

Health issues and adopting?

DH and I have always planned on having more than one child we had our DD then we were waiting a few years to get financially ready for a second. During that time DH got diagnosed with epilepsy. It is under control with medication. Then I had a stroke. It might have been caused by birth control hormones so another pregnancy is risky. We had always liked the idea of adopting and now that I really shouldn't get pregnant it is probably safer. A few times when I've brought up adopting with people they have said things like. " with your medical histories you probably wouldn't be able to. Does anyone know if this is true or how I would go about finding out if it was. I don't want to get my hopes up for something that I never will be allowed to do.

Re: Health issues and adopting?

  • My DH was diagnosed with Myelofibrosis which is a type of leukemia. Right now the doctors say its under control so we were cleared to adopt. One day in the future hopefully not for decades the only way to cure my husband and keep him from dying will be a bone marrow transplant. I think if your upfront with your agency they can let you know what they accept but as long as conditions are under control it shouldnt be a deal breaker

  • Welcome. I'm sorry to hear you guys have been through such a rough time.

At least as far as domestic adoption goes, what you'll need is certification from your doctor that you're expected to live a normal life span. If your DH's epilepsy is under control and your doctors feel you have a minimal risk of a recurring stroke, you should be fine.

The best thing to do would be to call agencies/law firms/facilitators you're interested in, and flat-out ask them if your medical history will be a problem. For one, it will give you a feel for them and if you'd want to work with them. For another, you'll be able to know if this is something you can pursue or not.
