NSAIFR: Stand Mixer recommendations

My Kitchen Aid Stand Mixer is breaking and I can't figure out how to fix it.  I'd love to get a new one, but I'm on maternity leave and can't justify the expensive.  However, with the holidays approaching I need a mixer.  Can anyone recommend an inexpensive stand mixer that they like?  I will eventually get a new KA, but until then I just need something to get me by that doesn't cost and arm and a leg.   I am going to post and run because LO has to go to the doctor, but thank you all in advance for any suggestions.

If it matters I make a lot of scones, muffins and cookies.  Not a ton of heavy doughs like bread.

    Have you tried calling KA to see if they have repair services? I always thought they lasted forever.

    Could you get by with a hand mixer until you can splurge on a new stand mixer?    They can pretty much do what most stand mixers do (minus heavy doughs, which you said you don't do a lot of), but for a lot cheaper.   Sure, your arm has to do a little work, but not too much!      and it is always nice to have a hand mixer around, i think, for small jobs or when you don't want to lug out your stand mixer.

    i would call k.a. and see what they can do- i have never heard of a k.a. mixer breaking! my mom got hers 35 years ago when she married my dad, and my sister is still using it weekly without a problem.

    There is also a KA outlet in Vacaville. I got a refurbished one there years ago and its still going strong. I'm not for sure how much they run there. Even if they are too much there maybe they will know where you can get yours fixed or know more about the warranty and if KA will fix it for you. Good luck!

    Call KA and talk to them, my mom had a small issue with hers at the 20 yr mark and they fixed it free. It is now over 35 yrs old and working great.

    Thanks everyone!  My KA mixer is only 9 yrs old.  I just recently pulled it out to start my fall baking and when I did I found that the head of the mixer doesn't lock into place anymore.  I put it down and lock it and it drops farther than it should so it can't mix because it's pushing into the base of the bowl.  I will give them a call and see what they say.  I've checked all the screws and they are all tight so I know nothing is loose, it has to be an internal mechanism.

    Call KA!  My husband used to work for them and they will really try to service it b/c they should last for a long time esp for home use.
