Natural Birth

? if you know about breech/positioning (not pg yet)

Hey ladies! This is definitely a cart before the horse post but I need every bit of input I can get before deciding what to do, so humor me :)

I'm sure some of you will recognize me as I post here sometimes (had a med-free birth with my son). Due to some serious fertility issues we are experiencing IVF is most likely in our future- and of course with that, the chances of a multiple birth are greater. I've already spoken to my OB to see what her stance is on twin birth, so that I'm prepared on the chance that it does happen for us, and her position is as long as baby A is head down, I can attempt a vaginal birth. If Baby B is breech, they will either attempt a version or for me, since I've had a vaginal birth of a large baby and have a "proven pelvis" she said she'd be okay with doing a breech extraction. Of course she said twin pregnancies are high risk so there's all kinds of monitoring and risks and induction by 38 weeks, but that's a whole 'nother issue!

Since doing some research, I've found that (i think) 40% of twins are both head down at delivery, and another 30% are A head down, B breech so that gives me about a 70% chance of having a vb if we do end up with twins. I know c-section is a valid choice and if I needed one, so be it, but I am personally really afraid of having one and I want to do everything possible to avoid surgery. My question is, assuming that I do get pg with twins- how proactive should I be and when should I start trying to get both babies in a good position? Like is it silly to start doing spinning babies exercises by 20 weeks? 15 weeks? What about hypnobabies? etc...any thoughts? TIA!

Re: ? if you know about breech/positioning (not pg yet)

  • I wouldn't worry about it until after 30ish weeks the baby(ies) would still have plenty of time to flip.

I would try to stay in good positions (hips above knees, flat back etc) so that the babies would want to be in good positions as well.

  • First off, good luck with IVF!  I hope everything goes smoothly for you and you have success on your first round.

The fact that she is referring to twins as high risk makes me a little suspicious that she won't be as supportive of a natural birth of twins.  This is totally cart before horse, but you'd want to check whether she or the hospital where you deliver requires a spinal catheter even if you don't get epidural meds, delivery in the OR, induction by 37 weeks, etc.

I think pretty much all OBs agree with yours re: Baby A being head down.  I am 36w with twins, and Baby A is breech.  My MW and OB are about as natural birth friendly as they come in Chicago, but they've told me it will be a c-section if Baby A doesn't turn head down.

I did the exercises from 20 weeks, and then when baby was still breech at 32 weeks I did acupuncture, chiropractic, inversions, you name it, and she still hasn't turned. :*(  So, unfortunately, I am not really a success story but to answer your question (finally!) yes I would start the exercises early, if nothing else they help with back pain!!
