1st race while pregnant

I ran a 10k yesterday and was a little disappointed.

I'm only 6wks and didnt think it would affect my racing so much, but i was out of breath much faster than usual - plus I had to pee at mile 4.

I have a cold today and maybe that affected the race too.

I fully understand that I'll have to slow down in the next 9mo - but psychologically its hard to not be competitive.

:(

  • Do not feel bad and do not be discouraged!  Running during pregnancy can be crazy -- one day you will feel like you could run forever, and the next day a mile will feel impossible.  I PRed a 5K before I got pregnant (in August) and then ran one at 5 weeks (mid September --not even a month later) and I -- wait for it -- was not even able to finish I felt so sick!  To put this in some context, I've ran 3 marathons and more 1/2s than I can count so I'm NOT a novice runner.  But since then I've had a lot of great runs.  I ran through my entire last pregnancy but you have to be able to live with a lot of crummy runs if you're committed to running the whole 9 months.  Good luck -- lots of better days are ahead of you!

  • I can totally relate to this. I ran a 10k at 8 weeks into my pregnancy and I was pretty disappointed in my time. my legs would simply not go any faster!! I was training fairly hard before I found out I was pregnant and I thought I was on track to make my goal time. It is super hard not being able to be competitive while being pregnant. Like the pp said, you have to put up with a lot of crappy runs to keep it up. don't beat yourself up about it! You did better than most by even running a race while you were pregnant! I was hoping I could continue running throughout my pregnancy but I had to give it up at 21 weeks. My back just could not take it and the bouncing was freaking me out. Kudos to those who can do it for the full 9 months, they are my hero!! Just do what you can do. If your body says no way, then stop, find something else you can do instead. Easier said than done, I know....but you will get the hang of it :) I was running, kickboxing, doing a Lift class, Zumba and spinning before I got pregnant. I am now down to yoga and elyptical machine only!! I was bummed but I've made my peace with it. I am ecstatic to be pregnant and I have accepted all the bumps along the way if it means I get to be a mommy soon!! good luck with everything!!!

  • I was a little disappointed at how I did in my first race after I got pregnant (6w), even if expected. Now I'd kill for that time, lol. I'm really slow, but at least I'm still able to run. There will be lots of time for PR's post baby :)

  • lol - I ran a half in January and looking at the timeline I must have been all of 2 days pregnant.  The race was awful.  I felt so slow, like I just couldn't hit my typical speed.  I stopped twice to go to the bathroom and I never usually stop.  And I was so thirsty the entire race.  I had to stop at every single water station.

When I finished the race I turned to DH and said "I better be pregnant or there was absolutely no excuse for that."

It affects you much faster than you would think!

  • Congrats on racing!

The reason I knew something was up before my BFP was that my running sucked. I was training for a 10 mile race and my speed workouts were awful. I was so frustrated! I POAS the morning of the race, and it also sucked. I started out too fast, but even at 4 weeks I was so much slower already. It was frustrating because I had been training hard for over a month hoping for a PR!

I keep telling myself there will always be races to tackle after baby(ies). I am just happy to still be out there running albeit much slower :)

  • Congrats! And don't worry about being slower. I am 21 weeks now and was super slow and out of breath until about 12 weeks. I ran a 10 mile race at 15 weeks and felt better than I had my whole pregnancy. Just hang in there. Your first trimester really does take a lot out of you but it will get better. It's weird, but it does:) Just feel happy that you are still able to be so active. It's great for you and baby!

  • Don't get discouraged! I've found that I have good runs and bad runs. Sometimes, I can't make it through 3 miles without peeing. And then I'll run 10 miles with no pee breaks and be fine! And even if your pace is slower, you're still awesome for running through your pregnancy!!! Keep up the good work!
