Adoption

Renewing homestudy.

Hello!

I post here sometimes. We are currently waiting to be matched with birth parents. We have been waiting almost a year. In Texas the homestudy is only good for a year. So we will have to update our homestudy soon. I was just curious if anyone has experience with renewing your homestudy? Surely it isn't as intense or in depth as the first one. Ecspecially if nothing financially has changed in a year. Thanks ladies!

Re: Renewing homestudy.

  • We just updated ours for the 2nd time as we have been waiting almost 2 years. It was more of a review if our preferences has changed, if our home has changed, etc. It was more of an annoyance than anything else!

  • I agree with Honeydew.  We are in TX and had to update ours for both of our adoptions.  Our caseworker came out to the house and I think she was there all of 15 minutes. Basically she asked if anything had changed, we said no and that was about it..
  • Ours was good from April 2006 to April 2007.  We updated it in May 2007.  When we updated ours we had to get new background checks and fingerprinted again.  Everything else was basically the same.  We just had to go over a few things when the SW came out to the house for about 20 minutes.  Thankfully, our our background checks and fingerprint went through fast because 2 weeks after the SW came to our house for our update, Ben was placed with us.  Our SW had to fax our updated homestudy to the agency while we were on our way to meet our son.

    Good Luck!

  • Hi- I am in process of renewing and only had to provide updates to the SW. I did have to request the report from the county child abuse registry again. Also, for my first hs, I limited my scope to Texas only adoption so the finger print process did not include the FBI records check.   I am not sure if laws changed, or if it is because I am matched with a baby out of state, but I did have to send my fingerprint card to the FBI this time. The FBI records check is taking 8-9 weeks as of this morning.  If I ever need this report again, I will definitely pay for an expediter to avoid this wait.
