Kia Sorento vs. Toyota Highlander

Does anyone have the Kia Sorento? My husband and I are looking at both of these cars. If you have either...please let me know how you like it and/or what the problems are. Looking at 2008 and above.

Re: Kia Sorento vs. Toyota Highlander

  • I don't have either, but I do know that Toyota's are way more reliable and hold their value much more than a Kia.

  • We love our Toyota Highlander Limited.  It's very roomy and comfortable and I really like the versatility of the second row.  There's also a ton of storage room with the third row folded down.  If you get a newer model, the third row is a split bench so you can have part down for more storage and part up for seating if necessary.  It handles really well in bad conditions and gets decent gas mileage.  The JBL audio system is really nice too.

I have a 2005 Corolla and have never had a problem with it. Befor that I had a Camry.  Toyota's are awesome!!

  • For our next car we are looking at a Kia Sorento.  We drive our cars into the ground so the Kia vs. Toyota brand name doesn't matter to us.

Actually this is no longer true.

Kia has done a huge revamp of their vehicles and are considered just as reliable with the same trade-in values as other companies.

Either way you would have a great vehicle.  The new Sorrentos (2009 and up) are one of the most popular selling vehicles of that class.  I do like the new Highlanders a lot too.

  • Comparing a Kia to a Toyota...Seriously?
  • We just sold our Highlander.  I liked it, but the one we had didn't have the third row.  With two kids, there won't be room for anyone else in our car.  My brother has the one with the third row seat.  We looked at getting a Highlander with the third row.  We opted instead for a Honda Pilot.  I love my Pilot.  it has the thrid row and room for groceries which most SUV's with the third row don't have.

Yeah, seriously. Because I've heard the Kia's have gotten better and I could get a loaded 2011 one for the same price as a basic 2008-2009 Toyota. So that is why I was asking if anyone has a Kia and is happy with it.

  • I have a 2006 Kia Sorento and I ADORE it.  It has been the best car I have owned, I have had minimum problems with it, it's not too expensive to maintain and gets decent gas mileage.  I've already told my husband when we buy a new car we are getting another Sorento.

I am a proud owner of a 2011 Kia Sorento (bought in April) and I am in love with this car. It came standard with seat warmers, Sirius radio, driver and passenger air bags, and much more. The car is roomy and the trunk space is phenomenal. I haven't had any issues with this car. My work commute is 1 hr. 15 min (about 120 miles a day) each way, and I needed something reliable. Another plus to this car is it only needs to be serviced every 7500 miles, rather than 3000. Oh, you can also get a third row...

I'd do it in a heartbeat. If it comes down to a loaded 2011 vs a basic 2008-2009, it is so simple.

Kia's are light years ahead of where they were.  The Sorrento's are very popular right now for good reason.  My IL's have one and I borrowed it for a week.  I wanted it so bad after that.  Plus their warranty is one of the best.

  • We just got the 2012 Sorento in July.  I love it!  It gets great gas milage, drives very smoothly (had a jeep liberty before), and is so roomy for a growing family.  I've yet to use the third row, but it flips down and the extra trunk space is awesome!  We chose the Kia because of the great price, Kia's vehicles are becoming very reliable, and on top of that, it is voted #2 best choice in its class in consumer reports... I think the Highlander is #1 though... but still much more expensive.

Our next car will be a Sorento and I agree that a Kia isn't what it once was. Much more reliable and better quality.

i wish i could be joking but my dad is the music teacher at a church so he owuld be mad. we had sex, all the time how bad i know but we dont want to wait and he said GREAT OH KAY! and I was really feeling the wets? down there- too embarsed to say- but he acted like man.
  • I LOVE LOVE LOVE my kia. It is a 2011. I have had no problems with it. My mother in law loves it and actually wishes that is what she had gotten. It drives really well and is super comfortable. I get great gas mileage (about 24 mpg). Their warrenties are great as well.

  • I was previously the owner of a 2008 Kia Sorento and I was sceptical when we purchased it, just because of the Kia reputation, but I never ever had a problem with it.  DH's aunt, who is very close to us, came over to show us her brand new fully loaded 2012 Sorento that she got this past week and it was fabulous.  She got it because it was something like $12k less than the Kia.  She traded in a Camry to get it, so she went from Toyota to Kia.  I think Kia still has an iffy reputation because of the name, but they are definitely higher quality vehicles now.  I traded in mine for a car because my son is 4 now, but with baby #2 on the way we are looking to get another SUV and after seeing her new Sorento, that's definitely what I want.

  • I have a 2006 Highlander Hybrid Limited that I love to pieces.  However, I am worried about the hybrid system once it is out of warranty.

Consequently, we will be trading it in for a new vehicle sometime before baby arrives.  We have been considering many options but are leaning toward a new non-hybrid highlander.  Here is our thoughts:  We use the third row seat with my nieces and nephews.  It is important to us to have that option.  The third row isn't roomy to begin with.  But, the Highlander's third row has more room.  There is also significantly more room in the second row (this helps with baby seats).  We also would like to possibly be able to tow a small boat or a trailer or any number of things with it.  The Highlander's towing capacity is 5,000 pounds where as the Sorento is 3,500 pounds.  Also, Kia's reliability has gone up especially in recent years.  However, Consumer Reports still rank it way below the Highlander (comparing both 2011 models).

Good luck!  I don't think there is necessarily a wrong answer.  I think part of the decision is what are you most comfortable with.  For me, I'm having a hard time getting something other than a Toyota because I have had such good luck with them.  When I went to college, I got a Celica (I think it was a 1995).  I drove it until I bought my Highlander in December 2005.  I changed tires, oil and break pads per standard.  I also had to get a new battery once.  The only other "repair" I ever made to it was the air conditioner.  I had over 150,000 miles on it and sold it for $6 or 7,000 without evening listing it.  I have driven my Highlander Hybrid ever since.  I also described our reasoning between the Highlander and a Sorento.  We are still comparing a few other options.

  • We have a 2011 Sorento and LOVE it.  The car, the features, the price, the warranty, etc. are all amazing.  When my husband first suggested looking at Kias, I scoffed at him.  Well, I can honestly say that I've been reformed!

We're not wealthy by any means, but had some decent money to put into a new car.  We could have gotten "bigger and better" but I'm glad we didn't.  This car is perfect for us.

  • I would go for the Highlander. One thing I would compare would be the safety ratings. Also, which is going to hold value over time better.

    Comparing a Kia to a Toyota...Seriously?

    Seriously.

We bought a 2011 Kia Sorrento in June 2010 when my 2006 Nissan Maxima with 70,000 miles on it blew the engine while driving 70mph on a California highway with my 8 month old niece in the backseat.  Nissan didn't give 2 sh*ts what happened.

I love, love, love my Kia.  I have not had a single problem with it (granted it only has 25,000 miles on it).  I love that it only needs servicing every 7,500 miles and it's not an expensive trip to the dealer every time.  It drives and handles very nicely.  It's comfortable and roomy.  The third row is tiny and like many 3rd row options in medium sized SUV's, the minute you put it up you don't have much trunk space so I keep mine down most of the time.  The 2012 model has a few features mine doesn't have.  I have a pretty fully loaded V6 model and it was about $30,000 (we got a stellar deal though).

My sister drives a 2008 Nissan Murano and just said the other day she's considering selling it and getting a Kia. She puts a lot of miles on her car and she agrees the warranty, etc is SO much better in Kia.

We've all driven pretty nice cars (Toyota, Lexus, Nissan, Mercedes, Infinity) in our family and everyone agrees while it's not a Mercedes or BMW, it certainly competes on almost every level with a Toyota/Nissan but for significantly less.

think you have to be ok with having a non-named and even budget-named brand car. And for me, that was just fine. My priorities are different than they used to be and any money I can save on a car I can put into our retirement accounts or into baby?s savings/college funds. I was considering and test drove a Lexus RX, BMW X5, GMC Acadia, and Toyota Venza. Seriously - my payments would have been more than 2x as much as the Kia. I could have easily afforded a car payment twice the amount, but didn?t want to go there. I don?t regret my decision.

I don?t care about resale value. I drove my last car (a Dodge Intrepid) for 11 years before it died. If I can get 10 years out of the Kia, I?d be thrilled. If not, well I didn?t pay out the nose for it.

I didn?t make this decision lightly. All of my research and feedback led me to conclude the Kia was a great purchase over the other cards I considered.

  • I have new Kia Sportage more of a crossover than the full SUV like the Sorento. I got it in April loaded and have had no issues at all.  I love the way it drives, etc.  I have owned Jeep Grand Cherokees in the past, so was a bit hesitant when buying this, but no regrets to date.  The price couldn't be beat along with the 10 year warranty.

  • We just got a new 2012 Kia Sorento in August and I love it! Although I was driving a 97 Chevy Lumina, so I think I would have loved anything haha! But really, it's great. I know there are different models, but I think we have the basic one and it comes with heated driver/passenger seats, 3 months of Sirius, and a backup camera that I thought I wouldn't need, but I LOVE it! I would definitely recommend the Sorento. Also, I didn't want to drive something that felt HUGE, and I felt really comfortable driving this for the first time. And the additional 3rd row seating is a nice extra feature (don't use it often, but it's nice in a pinch like this past weekend when we had friends over from out of town and were going to get something to eat!)

  • DH is a die-hard Chevy/GM fan and when I went to buy a car out of college- HE suggested a Kia, which I thought was insane. I went looking and fell in love with the Sorento. I ended up finding a loaded 2003 Sorento (in 2004) for $15K. I drove it for 7 years and sold it for $5K (not bad for 140,000 miles!) It was a fantastic car and I had almost NO problems with it.

When it came time to buy a new car, I looked around and could't stray from Kia. Last November we bought a 2011 Sorento and I absolutely adore it. We got the 4 cylinder EX- heated seats, back up camera, Siruis, third row for less than $27K brand new and it comes with a stellar warranty. Plus, they are at least assembled in America, which is something...

I am super frugal and feel like I got a great, reliable, loaded car for a great price. I've had it for a year and still adore it. Plus, it gets great fuel milage relative to the size. I've never had a Toyota, so I can't compare, but I definitely recommend the Sorento. I have the third row, which is we've only used a few times, but I do like having the option.

Keep in mind the 2011/2012 are redesigned and are bigger, so if you're looking at 2008 or 2009 it's a smaller body style with different features.  I feel bad for the people mocking Kia who haven't looked into them. They're missing out! :)

  • Wow, I guess the Kia is super popular! I am not remotely familiar with the Sorrento (couldn't pick it out of a lineup if I tried) but, we do have a 2006 Highlander. I have never had any issues with it at all, it's been extremely reliable and I like it b/c I'm very tall and there is lots of room for me in it! DH will be taking over the Highlander and I am starting to look for a used Toyota Sequoia because we will need the room with three kids, plus their friends and our dog ;) Have fun car shopping!
