Baby Names

4 letter boy names; start with G

DH's family tradition for boy names is such that FN has to be 4 letters & start with "G". Middle name has to be David.

DH doesn't like Gabe (my 1st choice) b/c a close friend's first son's name is Gabriel.

Help, please? Our LN is loooong and starts with an "H".

Re: 4 letter boy names; start with G

  • Gage and Gary are the only two I've come up with

    ETA: Gene, Gian, Gino

ETA x2 - The only name I have suggested that I like is Gian.  Gian David sounds cool.

I'm not new. I just hate The Bump.

  • DH is Gant. FIL is Gary. GFIL was Gene. We (read: I) don't want to reuse. DH hated his name because everyone always called him Grant.

DH likes Gage. I am just looking for other options.

  • Glen is the only name I could think of that hadn't already been suggested.

  • Those are seriously the oddest name requirements I've ever heard of.

For real....? ALL the boys in his family have four-letter G names? ALL of them?

If it was me, I would (nicely) tell my husband that this tradition isn't for me and find a name that we both like instead. Screw those people and their unnecessarily rigid name requirements. It's a bizarre imposition, anyway, and they don't get a say in what you name YOUR child.

  • Grey/Gray? I agree that this is tough-- it's hard enough to come up with a name with no restrictions!

  • Honestly, my H also had a tradition in their family w/boys names and requiring initials GW(lastname).  We tried to come up with a G name we like and couldn't find one we both agree on so we kindly told the family we will not be following the tradition.  They got over it.  If you're not into it, don't do it.  It's your baby, not theirs.  My mother in law told me she regrets following it and had she been older/wiser she would have likely not done it, either.

Holy crap, this! I typically am a fan of traditions, but not when they are as restrictive as this one.

  • I like Gage and Grey/Gray, but I also agree with PP's who said that those are some pretty strict requirements to follow.

Totally agree with alliejo. There is no way I'd continue this tradition. Having to find a name that fits a checklist of requirements, instead of finding a name DH and I love, sounds really silly to me.

Definitely. Four letter "g" name AND the MN David? That silly tradition would be out the window in a heartbeat if I it were my kid. It's gone on long enough.

I feel you guys 100%. I have mentioned it to DH that I don't think we should continue, but we haven't ever talked at length about it. I am happy that you guys think its just as ridiculous as I do.

Ditto. Sorry. There are just some traditions I couldn't get on board with. This one is so restrictive, I'd just have to say, "sorry, honey, we're starting a new trend."

  • The only one I thought of was Gray.  And I do think it's an incredibly silly "tradition."

This..  I can't imagine having someone else put those kind of restrictions on my childs name!

  • I gotta agree with some of the PP, I mean G with MN David is hard enough but putting a letter # restriction on it? seems like a near impossible task. I just feel like you are going to regret it because you aren't going to be able to name your son, you are going to just "settle" on a name that you pick out of a very very small list...
