XP - thigh numbness

Ever since LO was born, I have had numbness in my upper left thigh. It's kind of like when your foot falls asleep, except no tingly sensation - I can feel temperature and pressure change, but it just feels really strange... I think it started while I was in labor, and now, 7 weeks later, it hasn't stopped.

My MW suggested that I consult with my general practitioner or chiropractor about it, which I plan to do. But until I can find time to do that, I've been consulting the internet, haha. From what I've read, it sounds like meralgia paresthetica, but it seems like most people have that problem during pregnancy and it is relieved by having the baby. I didn't experience this during pregnancy, just during labor/postpartum.

Has anyone else experienced something similar? How did you treat it?

  • Top of the leg or outer side of the leg?  Were you in stirrups or pushing for a long time with you legs pushed up and out?  Sounds like you might have caused a bit of a stretch injury to your femoral nerve during delivery, in which case it usually heals on its own over time.

The outer side... I didn't use stirrups. I think it actually started when I was pushing in the tub..

  • Outer top of your thigh, without weakness in your leg is generally the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve.  Could be from positioning while pushing as it emerges from your pelvis and is easily compressed.  If that's the case then it generally gets better on it's own, unless you're putting continuous pressure on the nerve (ie tight pants/tight low belt, pressure from excess belly weight).  I would say see a neurologist if it doesn't improve.
