I've probably shared this story before, but I think it was eons ago possibly on TTCAL. Anyway, when I was a kid, I thought that once a name was used, that was it and it could never be used again. When I went to preschool for the first time, there were three other kids with my name in my class (I have a super common 80s first name). I was so mad at my mom, because I was sure she must've not filed some paperwork or something (even though I ended up being the youngest, so I "stole" their names, lol). When I got home my mom told me that anyone could use a name. I really just couldn't believe it. And I'm still kind of possessive about my common name.
Re: s/o name stealing
That's pretty funny. When I was in Kindergarten, my teacher told me my name was Jessica. I had never been called anything but Jessie. I argued with her. It ended in tears. I had no clue my name was Jessica.
ETA: I obviously got a super popular 80's name as well.
::giggle::
I googled "name stealing" and JBJ came up. Interesting
