What household mess do you judge in other people's homes?

We don't use our front door v. much (we come in through the garage) and so I just recently cleaned the vinyl banister.  It was GROSS with dead bugs, mold etc.  I wondered how many people have come to our door and given it the side eye.

What household thing do you find gross in other people's houses?  Overflowing garbage is one I hate.  But of course I'd never judge  Angel

  • Dirty toilet.  and I hate cleaning toilets.

  • A full sink, overflowing garbage, clothes all over. General clutter is ok though.

  • Tons of clutter, overflowing garbage, dirty counter tops and table, dirty bathrooms.

  • I have a weird one -- dirty pet food/water bowls bug me.
    .
  • DS had a drop off playdate on Saturday and their entryway smelled like cigarette smoke. That's not really mess, but I judged.

When I picked him up, we went upstairs to the living room and it was fine, so they must just smoke hanging out the front door (or maybe in the garage, which is down there).  But, ick.  I'm glad it was drop-off and I didn't have to stay.

That said, I was guilty of the dishes in sink, clothes all over the place, general mess and wouldn't let another playdate who dropped us off last week come in and see his room.  My house was abominable...

  • Dirty toilets. Really, just any filth. I don't care about clutter as long as it's obvious that it gets cleaned regularly. My house gets messy throughout the day, but it's clean.

I try to clean my front porch regularly, but I never use that door so I forget sometimes.

  • dirty toilets....especially if its around the outside....like bad aiming men.  BLECH! Also, this is just my personal preference, but bathrooms need to have hard floors....NO carpet...I don't care if its linoleum or tiles, it needs to be something that can be cleaned throughly.  And I don't like rugs hanging out, except maybe a small rug by the sink.  But the toilet rugs make me want to barf...seriously.  My IL's have those and all I can think of is "how much pee is on this rug that someone missed the toilet!"

SO, mostly bathroom stuff.  If your bathroom is clean, I don't care about a dish or two in the sink, or a bit of dust here and there.

  • Ew, carpeted bathrooms are disgusting!
    image
  • DH's house that he rented when I met him had carpeted bathrooms.  I wouldn't go in there without shoes on.  Seriously......
  • I've always wondered...what happens when the toilet overflows? And geez, many men are really bad at their aim...kids are worse. Just gross. We had carpet in one of the bathroom's at my childhood house when we moved in. It was ripped up immediately. I still remember how bad it smelled.

Totally agree with carpeted bathrooms and toilet rugs.  Can I also say that my MIL's plastic covered foam toilet seat (read:soft) - the one you sit on to use the toilet  completely grosses me out.

  • Strong cat smells.

    Dirty utensil drawers.

    Dirty refrigerators.

    Truly filthy floors.

  • Clutter doesn't bother me. Filth does. I don't mind a bathroom counter with stuff on it, but a toilet with a red ring inside because they don't clean or dried pee outside....ick. Dishes in the sink don't bother, but dried food on the stove top or table...yuck.

  • Disgusting pet smells. I know some animals and breeds give off stronger odors etc, but I'm talking about the "we have 10 pets and have not bathed them or cleaned up after them in 6 months smells." :gags:

  • when we moved into this house, we had carpet in the bathroom that came up immediately. I can't stand carpet in the bathroom

    sink full of dishes

old food on the stove top that has been sitting there for awhile

cat litter boxes that aren't cleaned daily

Haha I got a rug for the toilet for this reason!  I was tired of cleaning up the pee every day.  This way I can just throw the rug in the wash.  I only did this in the MB, not in the powder room.  Oh well, guess I'm gross!

DH's brother and SIL are just slobs.  Their house grosses me out.  Dirty tissues lying around, dirty dishes everywhere, can barely walk through the house.  You can't even see the dirt it's so covered in stuff.

  • I agree with the consensus:  clutter is ok.... filth is not.

  • I judge dirty bathrooms, dishes on the counter (dishes in the sink, not a big deal, but when they spill out onto the counter.... ick). I judge piles of paper, receipts scattered randomly. I judge a dirty entrance way - your entrance to your home is the first impression - make it a good one. Keep it clean, keep it clear of pile up stuff. Install hooks!!!!!

    That is all.

  • I've been in a lot of nasty houses (for my job), and the only one I really judge anymore is fecal matter (or the smell of fecal matter)

  • I judge a lot less now that I have kids of my own.

I'm still really picky about sitting on furniture with pet hair, though.  I'm just not a pets person.

  • I agree with J&A2008.  I judge a lot less now with 2 kids.

Bathrooms, however, are where I mainly judge.  My bathrooms are sparkling at all times, but I do clean them at least once a week.  I've seen L too many times miss when peeing before bath time...eww.

I think its disgusting!!!  I mean, why not just throw used toilet paper under your toilet to gather any spillage.

I'm in LOVE with Clorox wipes.  It doesn't take but 3-5 seconds to grab one and wipe any mis-aims.  Then there isn't p!ss sitting in my bathroom where it shouldn't be.  Ewww.  But having a rug there to "disguise" it so you don't have to clean up the p!ss as often is just GROSS!  And since the reason people get the rugs is to hide the p!ssage.....it makes me want to puke.

    Sorry, my pet peeve.

Umm thanks.  We're really not that gross, it's not like I lick it off the floor or get down on the rug and roll around on it.  But, you're right, using something like Clorox wipes would be cleaner and I might try that because it would be easy.  Thanks for the advice and I'm glad that I could make you feel so disgusted.

  • Filthy toilets in general gross me out, especially if there's um, hair, involved.  Blech.

I don't judge much though.  I was at a friend's house recently though and opened her microwave to see months and months of food caked in there.  That was kind of nasty.

  • one I haven't seen yet: gunky gooey windows.  I know little kids' smudges and drool are bound to happen but when they happen layer upon layer (throw in some food smears for good measure) and it is not cleaned for months that grosses me out.

in fact food messes left about the house skeeve me out.  i remember helping a gf clean her room as a teen and she had these dishes of snacks growing mold.
