Food Allergy

new baby coming soon..

4 more weeks and the baby will be here! Indifferent

With DS1, he was 9lbs and 14oz (i had diabetes) and as soon as i delivered they rushed him out to feed him formula due to his size.. even though i demanded to BF first.  THey only offer cows milk formula.

Has anyone went to the hospital with your own specific formula to feed your LO?  i will request to BF first, but he's also measuring large so i wouldn't be surprised if they take him away and give him Formula. I have a can of nutramigen that i'm thinking of bringing for the first day..

just curious if anyone brings their own formula to the hospital.

Re: new baby coming soon..

  • Maybe this is an ignorant question (or maybe it has more to do with GD which I admittedly don't know a lot about), but why would a large baby need to be whisked off and given formula? My niece was 9lbs 11oz and was never given formula in the hospital...?

I would ask your OB about bringing hypoallergenic formula if you're worried about it.

    Good luck.

they told me that in case he was diabetic also, it's safer to give them food immidietly.  But that is specific to big babies and moms who have GD. But it may be just the way the hospital / doctor operates.  I really hated the hospital i delivered my son in. I'm in a new / better hospital this time around so hopefully i won't even need to deal with that.

I'll bring it up on my next appointment.

I'm being hopeful that DS2 doesn't have any allergies but i would prefer to avoid cows milk either way.

  • Exciting about the new baby!!  Congrats!

I have never heard of a hospital forcing formula on a mom who wants and can breasfeed.  I would throw a serious fit!   I would definitely bring it up with your doctor and the nurse manager of the L&D unit at the hospital ahead of time.

  • I would ask your OB what the policies are at your new hospital.  Most hospitals I have worked at are very BFing friendly, and have sugar water in the delivery supply cart.  If the gestational DM babies have hypoglycemia, they give them a bottle of sugar water then get them BFing.

  • Wow, that would not have sat well with me.  They did take my son right away to test him.  I didn't have GD, but he was over 9 pounds.  I am glad you are going to ask at your next appt.  I hope you find that it is not that common of a practice and you have nothing to worry about.  Otherwise, I would bring my own formula.  Way to make a new mom feel powerless.  Jeez.

And, holy cow, 4 weeks!  How exciting!

  • I agree with everyone else- ask at your next apt. but I think it's really odd that they forced formula.

  • Okay, I need to update my tickers, but I've got an almost 3 week old now. We didn't have any issues as far as feeding. I BFed him in recovery (I had a c-section after 2 hours of pushing and no results). When our pedi did her rounds, she said that if they were to feed him formula, she would recommend a hypo due to DD's allergies and that the hospital SHOULD have some on hand.

Luckily, we didn't have to go there.

  • I sure as hell brought my own formula to the hospital with baby #2. I cant have any dairy related things remotely close to Jacob, so I wanted to start out with soy off the bat (currently on nutramigem, but thats another story). Definitely bring your own if you want!!! Also, they shouldnt give him ANYTING without your permission...im sorry but i wouldnt allow it if it were me, but im pretty mean like that.

  • thanks ladies!  I will speak to my doc on friday about it. It's a different hospital and it's my second time so i'm sure i'll be able to speak up and demand to BF only..  First time around i wasn't sure what was going on.  They showed him to me and put him in my arms for about 15 seconds and then i didn't see him for hours.. My family saw him before i did through the glass.

I'm super excited to deliver in a different hospital this time around. I didn't have a great experience overall first time around with how they handled everything (including my recovery and sending me home way too early).
