Anyone on Zofran?

How's it working for you?

I'm completely and utterly miserable. I dry heave the moment I wake up and puke at least more times during the day. I constantly feel sick to my stomach and can't really eat anything. I've lost about 10 lbs in 2 weeks. I have my first appointment today and plan to ask about it then but wanted to know what everybody else's experiences with it have been.

Re: Anyone on Zofran?

  • I don't take mine every day because my m/s seems to be worse on some days.  But when I do use it, it makes me feel 10x better.  If you're actually throwing up everyday, I would ask for it.

  • I take it once a day instead of twice like I was prescribed b/c the constipation associated with it is terrible. I am still throwing up a couple of times in the evening, but I am so much better during the day. I still feel icky, but I am not throwing up everything I eat/drink.

  • I am on it, it only works half the time which makes it worth taking to me. It def makes me constipated. Also on phenergan which helps me at night, I wish I could take it during the day but it makes me too sleepy
  • I'm on it and have been for 4 weeks or so. I took it with DS because I lost 6 lbs in a week and a half. I was so sick couldn't eat and my dr was talking about IVs and hospitalization. It was such a god-send. I started it right away with this one. 1/2 a pill in the am and 1/2 in the afternoon. With DS I took two a day. It doesn't always stop the nausea but it did stop the throwing up. It does lessen the nausea some and enables me to eat. It might be worth trying if it's going to keep you out of the hospital and help you function. Talk to your dr because they may have some other ideas that may help. I'm so sorry you are feeling so badly!

  • I take something else. Ondansetron. It's wonderful, and I haven't had any side effects.

ETA: I just checked, and it's apparently the same as Zofran.

  • I started taking it a couple weeks ago and it has helped a lot! I take it when I get up in the morning since I was getting sick before we left the house and then after we got to work.  I can now eat which has been a relief!  I would suggest taking it if you are getting sick everyday.  When I don't take it I feel yucky and end up getting sick.  Good Luck!

  • I'm on both Zofran and Phenergan and it takes the edge off, but I'm still extremely sick.

  • Zofran won't do much for the nausea.  Nothing really.

It will make you stop vomitting.  If you are having trouble drinking fluids your doctor will prescribe it to you.  If it's just trouble eating I would skip it.

Zofran made me horribly constipated (1 week+ without a BM) so if you don't need it don't take it.  If you're not eating that explains the weight loss.  10 lbs. in 2 weeks isn't crazy if you're not eating anything.  If you're dehydrated then there's a big problem.

I lost 5 lbs. in 2 days bc I was so dehydrated.  I called my doctor from the bathroom floor (I laid there in the dark for 2 days.)  They determined I was dehydrated and prescribed it immediately.

Lots of people lose weight during the 1st tri, but that doesn't mean you need Zofran.  If you are vomiting excessively and dehydrated you definitely need it.  If that's the case call your OB and they should see you right away.

I disagree 100%. I was horribly naseaus, couldn't eat anything except pretzels and was also throwing up multiple times a day when I started on Zofran. I feel 95% better - the nasuea is gone for the most part. I would suggest asking your OB about it.

I take one pill in the morning and one before bedtime. I also take one during the day if I'm getting nasueas. My OB also told me to take Colace twice per day to help with the constipation. Even with the colace I am still a little constipated, but I'd take some consitpation over feeling like I'm going to throw up all day every day.

Zofran has been my saving grace.

    This is not true.

"Preventing nausea and vomiting associated with cancer chemotherapy or surgery. It may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.

Zofran is a serotonin 5-HT3 receptor blocker. It works by blocking a chemical thought to be a cause of nausea and vomiting in certain situations."

This is specifically what it states in my  insert from the pharmacy.  It also helps with my nausea immensely.  Yes, I am still slightly nauseous, but it takes the edge off so I CAN eat and drink which in turns helps the nausea and prevents me from throwing up.   It does cause terrible constipation so if you can manage without it, that is better.  But you cannot be losing that much weight and throwing up multiple times a day.  That is not good and would definitely warrant a call to the doc fro a script.  I thought I'd get out of the MS this time, but no such luck.  I'm just hoping it doesn't last for 18 weeks again :/

  • I'm taking Diclectin. I'm thinking it's probably the same thing. I'm still trying to figure out when to take it during the day to cover me for my worst times (early morning and just after dinner). But I feel so much better. Only a little drowsy first thing in the morning.

I was constipated before I went on the pills so I'm not sure that I can attribute it to that, but now that I can keep stuff down I'm drinking more.

  • I've been on Zofran for a few weeks now. It helps take the edge off, but I'm still extremely nauseous. Unfortunately, it hasn't done a lot of good for me, but I still take it because at least I've never actually thrown up on it. I hope it works for you!
  • I take it EVERY day, sometimes twice a day. It constipates the hell out of me, but it's completely worth it. I can't manage my day-to-day stuff (ESPECIALLY my job) without it.

My advice it to take it on an empty stomach, as it tends to start working faster. Good luck!

  • If I don't take my zofran every 4 hours I throw up. If I go without it, I throw up ALLLL day. Now I take it regularly and I just throw up every couple of hours. I say get it. You can always just not take it.

I am also way constipated. But I started taking Colace (bid) and it seems to be slowly helping.
