Preemies

Still small???

DD was born 5 weeks early.  Weighing 4lbs 13oz.  Luckily she was perfectly healthy and we could bring her home with us, just had to keep an eye on her.

Now that she's 8 1/2 months old she's STILL in 3 month clothes and weighs 12lbs 7oz or so.  Is this normal for preemies?  I thought at some point they were supposed to catch up?  She's so super petite that I worry maybe there is something off.  Pedi wants us to go to an endocrinologist just to check that she's ok.  Anyone have any experience with this?

Re: Still small???

  • Are you and your H petite?

I thought preemies were supposed to "catch up" by age 2.

  • Definitely address it with your pedi if you are concerned about it. Is she active? Does she eat well?

From what I've heard, most of them are caught up by age 2, but I try my best not to always compare!

  • She's super active so even though she's on 24 calorie formula and we're shoving as much food into her as possible I think she's burning a good portion of it off.  She does eat really well and seems to enjoy any foods that she's been introduced to:)

Glad to hear that she has until age 2 to kinda catch up. I figure she'll be on the smaller side, but this seems excessive.  Thanks a ton ladies, you're putting my mind at ease a little.  We've been working closely with the Pedi since she was born.  Still doing monthly wellness checks to make sure she's not losing weight or anything.

  • We are in the same boat. I have one that will eat anything I put near her mouth and is still on 30 cal Neosure. She will be 1 on Saturday and is still under 14 lbs.  The doctors say that as long as she is eating well there is not really anything else we can do. The sucky part is that we will be on Neosure until she is adjusted to 1 year...

  • The other ladies gave you good advice, but I wanted you to know you're not alone.  My boys are nearly 8 months old and H weights right under 9 pounds.  Still wearing NB clothes.

  • Your nugget is the same size as mine!  At her 9month appt. she was 12lbs 9oz.  After her 6 month check up we went to the growth and nutrition lab at Children's Hospital and the doc was kind of like - why are you here? He actually told us to ditch the added calories and that she will self adjust and eat more either solids or drink more milk.  That was a hard day when I stopped adding the extra calories, and it took about a week, but sure enough she started drinking a little more and ate more at lunch and dinner.

My pedi has said the best way to check on the overall health of an infant is to look at their milestones.  Is she progressing?  As long as she is sleeping pretty well, and checking off her milestones I think you're ok.  The worry can be overwhelming, but I'm trying really hard to take my pedi's and the growth specialist's advice and just enjoy the ride.

  • My DD was/is the same way. She is now 16 mos and only 18 lbs. She has always been a good eater and content, so we never had a reason to worry and neither has her dr's. Also, me and DH are petite and have petite families, so we don't expect her to be a big. As a pp said they have until the age of 2 to catch up. But, I would get checked out if you're worried.

  • Thanks ladies!

I feel better that I'm not alone in my boat.  LO is definitely meeting her milestones on time.  Some of them early and appears to be perfectly healthy.  She's just petite.  I'm petite, but DH isn't.  We figured that even if she went full term she would have been on the smaller side.  Probably 6 1/2-7lbs.

I guess I was just surprised to find that she's still in 0% at 8+ months.  I'm sure she's fine, and pedi seems to think she's fine but I'm still going to get her checked out just to be sure:)

  • DD (who was a 1 lb 11 oz 12.25 in 28 weeker with IUGR) will turn 4 years old in 6 days and is still below the 3rd percentile for height.  But she is healthy and active and the doctor isn't worried.  DH is 5' 4" and I'm 5' 2" so she was probably going to be on the small side anyway. I'm sure we'll talk about it at her 4 yr well child visit in a couple weeks, but I don't think the doctor will make any drastic recommendations based on the way she has responded to DD's growth curve thus far.
