Food Allergy

Peanuts and Pregnancy

Does anyone know or have any info regarding if you eat peanuts when your pregnant that your LO will be highly allergic to peanuts?

Not even thinking of it when I was pregnant, I actually craved peanut and jelly sandwiches and ate them pretty regularly.  I stayed away from the foods obviously that I was allergic to even if it was just a mild allergy, but never at all took into consideration peanuts.  Know I am all worried.  Does anyone know if this is true?

Re: Peanuts and Pregnancy

  • There are some articles/doctors out there that see a correlation, but I have yet to find a source that I would put any stock in. That kind of rationale would have us all avoiding the entire top 8, gluten, and anything else that our children could possibly be allergic to. Unless you have a family history of allergies to peanuts I wouldn't worry about it.

We have no history of food allergies in my family or DH's so our OB did not feel like I needed to avoid anything in particular when it came to allergy-risks. Same was true while I was BFing. Like the pp, I had HG and one of the only things I could eat for a while was PB. Then when I was BFing, PB toast was the quickest, easy to eat breakfast so I ate a lot of it in the early months.

Unfortunately, DD does have a severe peanut allergy and mild tree nut allergies... so its hard for me to not question there being a correlation there. I just try to trust my doctors when they say that DD's allergies were not caused by my eating habits.

  • I have heard that, but have no idea as to the truth of it.  I can tell you, though, that I ate a lot of peanut butter throughout both of my pregnancies.   I have 2 children - one is allergic to peanuts and tree nuts, the other is not.

  • No allergies on either side and my son is allergic to milk/soy/egg/peanuts.. I ate peanut butter like it was going out of style while pregnant -more so than pre pregnancy b/c i don't eat meat so i was trying to get added protein. Same thing with eggs.. I had about 2 or more eggs a day  and his peanut and egg allergy are super high.

Soooo, i think it has a little to do with it -but not all since there are many mothers with twins and only one twin has FA.. and obviously they had the same diet for both twins.

I personally think you should always eat everything in moderation and it also depends on how your LO's immune system / gut is..

I'm pregnant now and was told to avoid peanuts.  I do eat almond butter but VERY LITTLE.. i'll cry if this baby is allergic to almonds since it's a staple of my DS1's diet.
