Upstate NY Babies

Does anyone have their 2+ yr old RF?

I feel like the time is coming to turn DD around. It's my paranoia that is getting the better of me! With my luck, as soon as I turn her around, we will get into a car accident. (Knock on wood that won't happen!)  I plan on turning her around when DD2 gets here (she'll be 27 mos), simply because it would be easier to reach things she throws and hand them back to her.

Ideally I would put her FF in the middle of the seat, but I don't want her poking the baby or covering her up with anything. I guess I just want someone to tell me everything will be okay if I put her FF on the end! lol

  • We RFd DD until baby #2 was born, at which point she was about 2.5.  When her Britax was in the middle, it was easy, but then behind the driver's seat, RFing was too big, I couldn't put the driver's seat back all the way.  The infant seat went in the middle (supposedly the safest) and DD was behind the driver's seat.

That is how I felt!  But it is how I would have felt whether she was 2 or 3 or 4.  We turned her in DH's truck about a week before she turned 2 in the middle of the 5 hour drive down to PA.  Like right in the middle of the KFC parking lot.  She was being a bear in the car, didn't nap, but turning her was no better.

Then just last month when we bought my vehicle, DH installed the car seat ff.  And on the side.  So then I had to worry about side accidents too.  But not being in the middle is inevitable for 1 or both kids anyway when you have more than one, so I just have to believe it will be ok.

Oh - and just a couple weeks ago we removed the angel care monitor from her crib.  Ahh my nerves.  But it had to be done - she was pulling up the cord and swinging her stuffed dog around on it.  But that still didn't make me feel any better with it not in there any more.

  • whoaaa. I was literally just thinking about posting the same question.. except for I was gonna say 3+ year old.

Yes. Eve is still RF. She will be 3 in February.  I planned on turning Eve around when #2 came too (about the same age difference).. but then I read.. https://articles.chicagotribune.com/2011-03-23/news/ct-edit-carseats-20110323_1_rear-facing-booster-seats-baby-seats This article.. And I couldn't bear to do it anymore.

So she's still RF.. She's about 31 lbs.. her seat in DHs car only goes to 35lbs. the one in my car goes to 40... So she'll definitely be RFing til she's at least 3, and then I don't know after that.. I also have to think about a seat for Natalie.. if I should get a FF only 5pt harness seat for Eve and move Nat into the convertible.. but if I decide to keep Eve RFing til the weight limit on the seats, I would need two new convertibles.

  • ALso - do you still have to lift her in for the RF?  Because now, dd can get in by herself and I love that.

Yep, I still lift her in. She's only 24lbs so it doesn't hurt my back (yet). We rented a minivan when we were in FL and the car seat was installed FF, and she loved climbing in on her own. Definitely a plus!

Thanks for that article! I really want to buy a minivan because I think she would have more leg room in the captains chairs RF. I wonder if DH would buy that logic. :-)

  • Also, Melissa what kind of car do you have and how do you have the car seats arranged? We had DD in the infant carrier in the middle because the driver or passenger would have had to have their knees in the dashboard. Come to think of it, the kids may have to be next to each other! (I have a Jeep Liberty)  One more thing to worry about - oye!
  • We turned both the kids around 18-20 months, there just isn't much room in either of our cars for rear facing seats.  Since #2 seat has to be on one side, not in the middle, we had no room for legs in the front passenger seat.  I would definitely put the seats on either side of the back, even if there is room to properly install one in the middle and one on the side (my cars don't have the room) you will have to worry about DD#1 putting things on and touching #2 and you probably wont really be able to see.  My kids get stressed with the other one cries.  I have to pull over all the time to stop them from injuring each other.  Lo#1 is behind the driver seat, #2 behind the passenger.
  • I plan on keeping DD rear facing until LO #2 comes. DD will be about 26 months then. We have a Subaru Forester and a Nissan Altima .... There is no room for the britax to be rear facing. I hope by the time we have to have LO#2 in the britax rear facing we can afford a mini van.... I hope ... I hope!

  • I just turned my ds around a few weeks ago only because he was at the limit if his carseat,he will be 3 in March. But i would of kept him rf til 3 if i could but the rf limit for his seat was 33 lbs and he is 32.5 lbs.
  • Evan was rear facing until he was super close to the weight limit- he was 30+ months. We'll probably switch Leah before driving to NC next June and she'll be about the same age. We have a Mazda tribute and DS sat behind the driver DD had her infant carrier in the middle...and I would sit behind the passenger on family trips.
