Parenting after a Loss

How did you cut the night time feedings?

I am digging my own grave with the lil man.  He is up every two hours throughout the night lately (which is waaaayy better then the ever 45 mins from a week ago).  I don't want to feed him during his wake ups, but it's a matter of being up for an hour while he cries or being up for 10 minutes while he eats.  Because I'm sleep deprived, I cave and opt for the nurse for 10 mins then back to bed.

I don't want to keep this up, but I need sleep.  What tricks did you use to cut out those night time feedings?

  • I just fed her until she stopped waking up in the middle of the night. I'm sure it doesn't work for everyone, though.
    I married a ginger.

  • I enlisted DH to go in first to try to put him back to sleep withou nursing and saved the boob for when he couldn't. I set a time before which we would try that and after which he'd get fed right away and marched that time later as he got older.

  • My pedi's solution is to start solids. According to him, when babies reach 15-17 lbs, they start needing more calories than they can get from BM, so solids are necessary.

We tried oatmeal with S a few days last week, and I think it did help a bit. But then he got a rash, so we had to stop for a few days to see if that was what caused it. Now he has a cold, so I'm waiting for him to get over that before I try him back on the oatmeal again.

  • I didn't try cutting out night feelings until she was a little older than your DS. When I did start I did what pp said and sent DH in. I started out at 5 hours. If it had been more than 5 hours I feed her if it was less or she woke up after a feeding I sent DH in.

My daughter is still a terrible sleeper. She still wakes up at night just not as often.

  • I winged it.  Eventually she got better, and now only wakes up once or twice.

  • I am fairly new at this so don't know if these things will work.  I heard that giving a bath and giving milk in a bottle right before bedtime helps lot of babies sleep longer stretches.  I give LO a bottle around 6pm or so and give him a bath around 7pm.  He plays a little bit between 7 and 8pm and than I nurse around 8pm.  He usually nurses for 20 mins to a half hour on each breast and falls sleep around 9pm.  From 9pm he usually sleeps until 1-2am. I feed him at 2am for 20 mins and than again at 5am. This has been only happening for a week or so and will most likely change.
