Question for those of you that live in snowy areas

Do you like the snow?  Do you enjoy it or does it bother you?  I assume at some point you're just over it, right?  Are there some parts of the cold weather that you're ok with and others that you aren't?

I'm born/raised California girl so the only time I've been in snow has been in the mountains!  I was watching The Family Stone last night (one of my all time favorites!!) and loving seeing the snow in the movie, but of course it's a movie.  :)  We contemplate moving out of state someday and while I think I could handle "4 seasons" I don't know if the real cold weather would get to me or not.

How do you feel about snowy weather?

Re: Question for those of you that live in snowy areas

  • I live in Michigan so we definitely get snow.  I like it at the beginning because I enjoy having a "white" Christmas and the kids going outside and sledding and building snowmen.  We also enjoy taking them on ski trips in northern Michigan.  I hate driving in it.  But by the time March gets here I am sick of it.  I can't wait for Spring to come.  There are some years that we get snow into April so I am really sick of it by then.  I don't enjoy the really cold temps it brings with it.  When you get below zero temps and the wind is blowing too it's just not enjoyable because it's even too cold to play outside.

  • I was born and raised in Southern California (moved away to New York for college) so I had a hard time adjusting the first few years. Now I love the seasons, and I love winter through the holidays. February and March I am pretty over it, but only really now that I have kids. Pre-kids I really didn't mind it. Last year was so awful with all the snowstorms that I am dreading this winter, but hopefully it won't be as bad. The good thing is that my parents now live in South Florida, so it is easy for us to take off for a quick trip to see them when we get really sick of it.

  • I like the snow, but the past two winters here have been more brutal than we had become accustomed to.  I was definitely over it by the end of the winter

  • I personally LOOOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE it.

I love the cold cold cold weather. I love being a SAHM with the cold cold cold weather and snow. I feel that truly get to enjoy it- vs. bundling the kids up, shoving them in the car, cleaning the car off with all the snow, taking them to DC, taking them out of the car, driving to work (with bad roads) etc. - I just bundle the kids up and let them play on our front lawn- its great- then we all go in and have hot chocolate and light a fire in the fireplace.

So I just get to enjoy the snow-

I DO get a little itchy around late feb/early march when sometimes our weather teases us with a little warmer weather and then snaps back in to the cold for a bit longer.

  • I agree with other posters.  I like it, but get sick of it around Feb/March.  It is a pain to drive in.

My dad's family is all from California.  They think they hate the cold, but honestly, they just don't know how to dress for it.  My cousin thinks he's bundled up in a sweater and jacket.   My grandpa brought a windbreaker last year when he was here for Christmas :)

  • I looove the snow.  I love getting snowed in and having a reason not to go anywhere, and having my H home.  BUT- I often wonder if I would feel this way if I weren't a SAHM?  If I HAD to leave the house with everyone (b/c my job would have required it, H's is much more lenient) I might not appreciate snow so much....

  • I have lived in Minnesota my whole life and have a love/hate relationship with snowy weather.

    Love:

    It's not Christmas without snow.

We're snowmobilers, DD#1 is getting licensed this year.

    We plow it.  Snow=money.

I like having the different ranges of wardrobe.  I love tanks and flip-flops but cute boots and my ski jacket are pretty nice too:)

    Hate:

Digging my car out of 6 feet of snow...just plain sucky.  But we're finally building our garage, whoo-hoo!

Last winter lasted longer than any of my pregnancies.

People who can't drive in snow.

Overall, I like having the 4 seasons even though this year was super odd.  We kind of skipped spring.  And winter and summer can be sort of extreme with below zero temps, blizzards at the most inconvenient time or dealing with humidity and strong storms.  But it's rarely boring weather wise:)

  • I hate the snow, but I just have to get over it every winter. I hate being cold, I hate hate hate driving in snow (great thing about SAH: I don't have to drive to work when it's crappy out!). It is pretty to see and it's fun to go out with DD and play in it, but I could happily live without it.

  • I live in Southern Ontario Canada, and I love the snow.  I don't even mind it at the end of March.  Snow outside makes being inside feel cozy.  I like going out to shovel. I loved tobogganning and skating as a kid.  I also love fun winter hats with pom poms and mittens!!

The only thing that I hate hate hate about winter is:

When you shovel your drive way and clear the off all the snow to the sides and a bunch of snow plows drive by and pile a mountain of snow right back on the entrance of your driveway and it's really compacted and heavy and you have to start over again!

I know there's a special plow that prevents this from happening but our city doesn't use those.

    That's highly illogical.
  • I grew up in AZ....and now I live in MI. It was a big adjustment!

I love the snow, but I hate the cold. If it's cold but sunny and snow on the ground, then I'm happy. When it's cold and cloudy, I get grouchy. I LOVE days where it's in the 40s+ and not too windy and snow on the ground and sunshine. So gorgeous. But when it's too cold to walk around or just getting the girls in the car makes my hands hurt, again that = super grouchiness for me!

I grew up in northern Canada where we always hoped it would wait until October to snow and wasn't a suprise if we had our last snow storm in July (yes, JULY!)

I LOVED it as a kid, and now in a slightly calmer winter climate, I love the snow when I can be dressed appropriately.

When I was working, I disliked the other drivers (went from 25 minute drive to 2.5hr+) however it was always exciting to get home to play with the dogs in the backyard.

Long story short, snow is awesome.

  • I like snow as long as I don't have to drive in it in the middle of a storm. I enjoy it and look forward to it most of the time.

I'm over it when it's been a loooooooong winter and I'm ready to get out of the house more without dressing in a gazillion layers

Ice is the thing that bothers me most. It's almost impossible to deal with roads when it's icy, and that scares me more than 3' of snow.

Honestly, we don't live in the stone age any more, so snow is a pretty easy thing to handle once you get used to it. I went from a lifetime in CA to 6 years in CO (lots of snow, but in manageable doses), to MD (snow that no one knows how to handle) and now MA. I'm secure in the thought that they know how to clear their roads.

  • I love the snow!  I live north of you in Portland, so we typically get snow a couple of times a year (not a lot) but I love it!  I would take snow over rain just about any day of the week.  While I love the snow, Portland SHUTS DOWN if it snows b/c no one can drive in it, hilly roads that are not great for the conditions, etc.  You pretty much feel kind of trapped depending on where you live (we live at one of the higher elevations in the city).  I agree with Stacey though that it is so much better not worrying about getting to work in the snow and just being able to enjoy it.  DH can remote in to work from home if necessary, so it is not as stressful as when I worked downtown and getting there could be dicey.

  • I LOVE SNOW.  Love it.  My husband loves it.  We all do!  I am never over it.  We;ve gotten TONS the last couple years and the only time I was "over" it was when we lived in Philly and our street never got plowed, aka we couldn't drive anywhere.  But I reeeeeeeeeally love snow.  Everyone who knows me knows it!

I hate, hate, hate the summer, though!

  • I don't really feel one way or the other about it, it just "is," if you know what I mean. The only time I really get sick of it is when we have a bunch of storms on top of one another followed by a cold spell, because then it takes forever to melt off. Old snow get really dirty, and then we get a warm day and it gets sloppy, but then it freezes again overnight...it's just icky. But usually, it snows and then it's gone within a week. So, it's fine. I dislike extreme cold much more than snow.
  • I'm shocked by how many of you say you love the snow! I effing hate snow (lived in Ohio my entire life). It makes driving a total PITA (one time it took me four hours to get home from work ~ 30 miles away), I hate having to get the whole family bundled up just to go to the grocery store, and I seriously feel like crying when I have to go out in subzero temperatures. If DH ever got a job offer in a warmer locale, I would start packing my bags:)

  • I grew up in Western PA and live in Maryland now. I absolutely love the snow; the part of winter that I don't like is the snowless cold weather + wind.

I'm of the opinion that if it's going to be cold (i.e., 32 degrees or below), there needs to be snow. And if there is going to be snow, it needs to be beautiful, fluffy, and white - not icy, slushy, and black/dirty. Freshly fallen snow is absolutely perfect to me :-)

Also, it's only really welcome on weekends and/or when we have nowhere to go, lol.

Who doesn't love a white Christmas and playing outside during that first snowfall?   But long about late January, icy driveways, dirty piles of snow, gray skies and wind chills below zero = seasonal depression for me.  That's when I'm ready to put a Hawaiian vacay on the credit card.

I am Turkey Lurkey... b/c it sounded better than Cocky-Locky.
  • I love the snow, just like I love the spring, summer, and fall.  I can't imagine living somewhere we don't get to fully enjoy all four seasons.

ETA: yes, winter can be long when you're lugging a LO out and about.  But, the past two winters when all of our boys were big enough to enjoy it (and fully mobile) I can honestly say that spring came as a surprise and I was disappointed to realize we had enjoyed our last day of snow play.

This is how I started out in life...but then we moved. In the StL area and in Oklahoma, snow is so far from wonderful. It's almost always accompanied by ice and no one knows how to drive in it and it sucks so bad! So, that totally ruined my relationship with snow.

Now that I've moved to PA, which gets real snow, I don't hate it like I did in the midwest. But I really hate being cold, so I still don't love it like I used to. I'm hoping that when LO is old enough to go sledding and such perhaps I will finally learn to love it again.

  • Given that my DH's family's income depends on there being snow, I've learned to become quite fond of it.  I grew up in WI then moved to MN when I got married...  When you have cold/snow/winter most of the year, it's kind of mandatory that you learn to accept it for what it is - no road construction and mosquitoes!!!  OTOH, there's nothing like getting out to play either on the snowmobile or skis in freshly fallen snow at night!!  Or as kids to slide down even the smallest of hills on a sled...

The thing is, the climate and situations surrounding it (i.e. sometimes you don't get plowed out right away!) are part of living in this part of the country.  Rarely will you see anyone from the UP of Michigan complaining about a 30 inch snowfall, you'll instead see them out shoveling off the roofs because that's more important than the driveway or roads.  Even if you stay in the part of the country you're in, if you move out to a more rural area, life will be vastly different from a city population center.  The same holds true for places with winter climates.

  • I'm also from the midwest and although I now live on the east coast, snow is just a way of life.  I usually love it at first.  The novelty of it is great.  And it's fun to have something "different" to look forward to.  I love dressing up in chunky sweaters and boots and building a fire in the fireplace.  And I love a really good storm.  Nothing like being stuck indoors for a day or two during a blizzard (for some reason I love to bake fresh bread and things when it storms).

But...  it gets old quick.   Somewhere in mid-January/February when you're trying to run into the store for milk and you're literally freezing your arse off it's not as much fun.  The kids start to get stir crazy and you long for warmer temperatures.

But I like the change in seasons and I'd really miss snow if I lived in a warmer place.

edit: I just read all the responses and am laughing at all the Ohio girls.  I'm from Ohio too and yes, the winters are long and gray there.  I grew up on a farm on a county road that had some shady areas where the snow/ice wouldn't melt no matter how much salt or gravel they put down.  It wasn't uncommon to be "snowed in" for days at a time. Looking back, that kinda sucked.

YES!  I have been saying for years that we should be celebrating something major toward the tail end of the winter to keep everyone's spirits up.

I also think one of the hardest things is daylight savings.  I think we're all ready for it to be lighter at 5:30 by February.

  • Depends on the day..lol

I'm in Missouri, so we get a lot of ice due to melting snow that freezes overnight. Ice can really suck if you need to get somewhere.

But, after living in Savannah, GA for 2 years and just moving back this year, I am super stoked about this winter.

For me, the holidays were NOT the same in Savannah. Green grass and leaves on most of the trees with no snow just doesn't feel like Christmas.  I was always slightly depressed around this time of year in Georgia.

Now, come March/April, I loved living in Georgia.  It was super nice outside while my Missouri friends and family were still dealing with the cold.

I lived in Michigan (Lapeer, just outside of Lansing) for awhile..   and I get what you're saying, but to be fair, Michigan doesn't see a lot of ice because the snow never really melts, KWIM?  Here in Missouri (and I imagine, also in Ohio) the snow melts during the day, but then the water re-freezes overnight, thus creating ice all over the place.

Ice is completely different to deal with than snow.

We had a short reprieve of about 5 years when we lived in Arizon and Texas. It was wonderful. I'm hoping we can move back in the next couple of years and say goodbye to snow forever.

If I could wear shorts and flip flops year round, I would be so happy.

  • I lived in Texas for high school then moved somewhere with 4 seasons for college. The first year was a hard adjustment. I lived in the basement of my dorm, so my room was never warm. I did not have enough winter clothes. Now that I have more clothes and a warm house to live in, I love it. What I do not like here is that spring takes over summer so we only get 2 months of summer here. I like the snow, but the rain gets to me.
  • I love snow when I'm skiing.  I also love the first few days of snow with the kids.  Then I'm over it.  In general, I dislike cold weather, and strongly dislike Dec-March.  When April rolls around, I'm the happiest person in the world.  Fortunately, we have great holidays to celebrate over the winter, as well as three of our birthdays and our wedding anniversary thrown in there, so that helps a little.  :)

ETA:  For me, the absolute worst part of the winter is when we get snowed in and can't leave the house at all. The first day is cookie baking, snuggling, and fireplace fun.  Then I get cabin fever and would do anything for a dose of spring.

  • Sorry, lurking, but I've lived in MI my whole life.  I really only like snow around Christmas, and maybe here and there outside of that.  I don't really like any outdoor winter activities (DH doesn't really either), so we have cabin fever pretty bad by the time spring actually comes.  Lake effect snow is different than a normal snowfall - it's usually an intensified version of what would actually happen if the lake weren't there.

My SIL and her family are moving to the Upper Peninsula next spring, and I think they are just crazy.  They'll get winter starting in Sept. or Oct., and it will probably last until April or May.  No thanks!!

Well...I grew up in the Mid-Atlantic and now live in the mountains of Central Idaho.  We can have anywhere from 4-6 feet of snow on the ground during the winter.  Snow starts late October/early November and doesnt completely melt away until mid April. Come about month 4 of snow it gets a bit old.  Living here you really need to get out of town about the end of February for about a week.  Here the winters can be a bit gloomy and overcast.  Last March we only had 3 days of sunshine.  Colorado to start out...EXCELLENT CHOICE.  I lived in Colorado for almost 4 years (about 30 miles east of Denver).  Although their winters can be snowy they have the most days of sunshine than anywhere in the country usually over 300 days.   So...do I like snow (no I hate it, my ideal temp is about 80) but living in a snowy area would be easily tolerated as long as there is a moderate amount of sunshine.  What gets me through the winters here is our summers are ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL.
