i edited to add what i've got. i want something good for taking pics of J... whatever it is that means lol. budget -- under $500? not sure if that's possible?
I remember when A was about a year I got an 35mm {edited: not an 85mm. i'm a dumbass}. It was great because I didn't feel like I was right on top of A (esp. since she was always moving anyways) and I was able to get more "wide angle" than my 50. It is definitely my go-to lens when I'm out and about since I don't have a good zoom lens.
What do you not like about the 50? Do you feel like you're too crowded to get anything but close ups, or do you feel like it's too wide? Would you enjoy having a nicer zoom lens?
If you feel like you're always trying to back up with the 50 and that it's too close for your space, I'd recommend a 35mm. Canon makes one (I think it's f/2.0?) - but I've never used it before, so I can't tell you how it is. I have used the L version (that's $$$) and I love it and the focal length.
If you feel like your 50 is too wide, I have an 85mm 1.8 and I love it. It's great for me outdoors, but I really can't use it in our house because it's too long of a lens - I have to be in the other room to get anything other than a tight head shot! These run around $400 new, but I bet you could find a used one if you looked.
Tamron makes a 28-75mm 2.8 zoom lens that I've heard good things about. I think they run right around $500, but I'm not positive. I'm not a fan of zooms for my shooting style, so I'd play with one for sure before buying.
Re: camera lens?
what do you want it for? what are the limitations of your current lenses that you need/want a new lens to offer? what is your budget?
those answers will usually point you in the right direction
Do you want another prime or a zoom?
