2nd+ time moms... is labor contraction pain like...

when you get a charlie horse in your calf?  We just started our birth classes and were talking about breathing through contractions.  When I get a charlie horse in my calf, or foot or anywhere, I always just try to relax and breath through it, since it sort of has to work itself out.  And those things are painful!  I realize that actual labor contractions are probably quite a bit different from a charlie horse, but just wondering if it's the same sort of sensation, since you can't really do anything to stop it...?

  • I would say IMHO that its a good comparison.

I would also compare it to an EXTREME period cramp.

Its really odd because when a contraction hits its like it takes every fiber of your being and concentrates it on your lower abdomen. It grabs your concentration and focus and wont let go.

  • Yup, I think so.  Except with my calf it is like a panic because I am trying to pull my foot back to stretch it out to make it stop.  But with the contraction there is nothing you do to make it stop, you just know it will, and you concentrate on getting thru it instead of stopping it.
  • That would probably be accurate in the early stage of labor AND if you DONT have back labor. I had back labor with both my deliveries and the best way I can describe it is like being strapped to a medieval torture device that twists your upper body in the opposite direction as your lower body. The pain my lower back was beyond excrutiating. Thank God for epidurals!  That said, I'm hoping this baby is not sunnyside up and I get a experience "real" contractions this time (the period like cramping) instead of the unbearable back labor.

  • Its funny that you say this! With my first I got charlie horses all the time! It was AWFUL! DH and I decided one day that instead of freaking out about it I should calmly use my breathing methods I had learned to get through them. I feel like it was great practice! However a CH is so sudden and unexpected. Labor pains usually dont start full force and for me once I got to the really painful ones they were still a gradual pain.

  • Hmmm, maybe after transition, but I don't think contractions are anything like CHs before that point. After transition it was like "holy cow, how do I move to get comfortable?" you just have to deal with it and breath and realize it'll only last a minute or two.
