How fit do you really need to be to get pregnant??

Hi everyone, I've got a question and I'm hoping to get some opinions/a kick in the butt.

I've been TTC for 7 months, I'm in the middle of an anovulatory cycle now, CD 80, two days left of Provera pills, hoping for AF soon so I can start over.

Meanwhile, with this 80-day cycle I've started to get myself in a funk. Having a baby seems so far away right now that my dedication to my health and body has gone out the window (when I know this is the crucial time to care).

I'm not THAT overweight. I'm still in the normal BMI range (though very upper of normal) and don't fit into my clothes. I need to drop around 15 pounds to back where I was when I was fit. One year ago, I ran a marathon. Last May, I ran a half marathon (though it was hard; even then I really wasn't my fittest). Now I'm lucky if I can run 5 miles!

I've lost it all. And since I really don't yet know why I'm having trouble TTC, I'm placing the blame on myself. I'm sure it's not ALL me - but that's where my question comes in.

How fit do you really need to be to get pregnant? If I lost those 15 pounds, got fit, gained muscle, etc. would it really help my chances? Or just make me feel better about myself? Either way it's a win-win, but knowing that it might help me get pregnant might just be the starting point I need. I eat a LOT. My portions are very large. I can go plate for plate with my husband, and I'm just lucky I haven't gained more weight. I also love sugar..and carbs. Ugh.

Nothing would get me in the gym faster than to know for sure I'd up my chances for a baby by becoming my fittest self. What do you think? How fit were you when you got pregnant? Thanks for your input!

  • I highly doubt that being 15 pounds overweight would negatively impact your fertility but being fit and eating well can definitely help DURING pg.  I bet you would feel better overall, both physically and emotionally if you devoted some time to taking care of yourself.

good luck and hang in there!

  • My husband and I were TTC for about a year before we got pregnant. Coincidentally, we conceived right at the end of my training for a triathlon. If I did the math right, I was actually two weeks pregnant when I did my triathlon!

Now, I'm not saying to go and train for a Tri, but being fit definitely helped! Good luck!

  • I think being fit when you're TTC is more about having a healthy pregnancy and birth than it is about getting pregnant. Obesity during pregnancy is a risk factor for a variety of problems.

I was pretty overweight when I got pregnant with both my boys, and I know lots of heavy women who have gotten pregnant easily, so I wouldn't use that for your motivation. I didn't do anything special to get pregnant, and with DS#1 it took 8 mo, with DS#2 it took one random time.

Just remember that you want to be in good shape for that baby when he/she finally sticks and use that for motivation. ;)

  • I was 110lb when I got pregnant (But I've been having some problems with being underweight) I think being 15lb overweight might help you look and feel better, but it's not really going to impact your chances that much. Try eating healthier, and drinking more water. Yoga helps also. GL!

  • If you were very obese it could hurt your chances, but 15 lbs overweight doesn't sound like much. I DO have something I just started though that may interest you called Visalus. It's a super healthy drink that has more nutrition than you could possibly eat in a day, plus people are dropping weight like crazy. A friend of mine in 4 weeks lost 15 lbs and 6 inches in her belly... with no exercising. Besides that, the energy it gives is amazing. Plus it's gluten free, kosher, less than one gram of sugar... and it tastes like cake mix :)

If you're interested, I can PM you my personal link.
