NBR: Ankle Sprain

I fell off a curb at HEB a couple of weeks ago and sprained both ankles.  My left one worse than the right one.  I have been working on rehabing the right ankle but the left one has just now had the swelling decrease.  I wore a boot for 2 weeks and an air brace since last Monday to now.

My ankle is still a bit swollen and it hurts like crazy.  What has been your experience with healing and timing?  I am traveling this Thurs through Sunday to one of our offices to help with the move.  I don't want to cause more damage but I would like it to hurry up and heal.

I want to get back to walking and working out!

Re: NBR: Ankle Sprain

  • Are you icing 20 min on/20 min off as much as possible? Elevating? I'm sorry... Spraining two ankles at once is the pits! Hard to say what recovery sime should be as those muscles and ligaments are finicky things.

  • Ty hurt his leg in football.  We treated it with a product called biofreeze I got from our chiro and homeopathics.  He used arnica and one for swelling that I can't remember the name of off hand.  The biofreeze really is amazing stuff and helps so much.  We also had his leg taped by our chiro.  That helped to rework the muscles, ease the pain and allowed him to heal faster.  Maybe look in to kinesio tape.  It really helped me get through working about 6 months ago when my knee was really bothering me.  I could actually bend, run, chase toddlers for pics when I could barely walk without it.  I busted my a$$ at a session yesterday and am so sore today.  I can't wait to get to my chiro tomorrow.  I hope you feel better asap!
  • I iced the first 2 weeks.  Now I do elevate at work and at home as much as possible.  I do agree... Spraining two ankles sucks.

  • ps - I have some biofreeze sample packs left over from Ty's injury.  If you or your dh wants to run by and pick them up, you are welcome to them.  We are leaving in about an hour but I can leave them on the porch if you want.
  • Thanks for the offer L!  DH has some and we never thought about using some of it.

I also think the tape might be helpful with all the work that I will be doing this weekend.  Where do you get it?

  • I sprained an ankle really badly when I was in high school and it took about 6 weeks for it to heal to where I felt comfortable walking on it and probably 10 weeks until I felt like it was really healed. It sounds like you're doing everything you can to help them heal - just keep it up! I'm sorry...having two sprained at once would be so hard!!

I LOVE LOVE LOVE Biofreeze it is pretty amazing stuff! I wished I had some I would bring you but I go through it like crazy with my back. Here is a link you can order it from if you can't find it locally.

  • Me too.  I wish it didn't have dye in it though.  I can't give it to the little kids for that reason.  I bought some that doesn't have dye from Numedica but it doesn't work nearly as well as the biofreeze.

You need someone who is trained in taping.  You might be able to find a video on youtube or something, but I really think this is one of those cases where a pro is worth it.  My chiro does it - most OT's do it as well, at least the ones I know do.
