December 2010 Moms

Working mom back for some questions: BF'ers please come in:

I can't believe how much has changed since I went back to work in August. Time is just flying by! Julie is going to be 11 months on friday!!!

So, now that she's advancing a lot more I have questions. First meal time: what are y'all feeding your LO's and if you give them grown up food, how big are the pieces? I just read the waffle thread and was curious if y'all give a whole waffle or in pieces? Whole seems scary :( We're working on feeding her more grown up food and less jars but we aren't consistent yet.

Second, what kind of shoes are y'all buying? Julie is standing and getting ready to walk so real shoes are on our to do list.

Last for those who are still BFing how do you plan to wean? Are you already? Julie stills nurses after work, before bed and all night long. We are going to do CIO for the third time tonight because Julie woke me 8 times last night to comfort nurse. Ugh, her damv ear infections keep setting us back in the sleeping alone department and I'm friggin tired of co sleeping. 1 year is coming up real fast and I can't imagine not nursing at this point. Anyone have wisdom/advice. TIA

Re: Working mom back for some questions: BF'ers please come in:

  • I give food in french fry sized strips or chopped to the size of cheerios.

Robeez are the best shoes.  They have soft bottoms (recommended by my doctor) so they don't interfere with learning to stand and walk.

I haven't thought about weaning but I plan on Bfing until 2 since that is what is recommended.  I figure if I can do it, then why wouldn't I.

  • Table food - little pieces - size of cheerios.

For shoes - I don't worry about my kids actually walking in shoes until they are good walkers.  Isaac will wear socks or go barefoot at home and only wear shoes if we run to the store or something.  I figure since winter is coming up he won't be walking out side until spring.  Then I'll worry about what shoes to buy for walking in.

Not really worrying about weaning yet.  With my other kids I just switched one BFing session with whole milk in a sippy cup gradually until I had completely weaned.

  • We feed DS a little bigger than cheerios size pieces.  I tried doing the strips but he doesn't have any teeth and just shoves the whole strip in his mouth.  He does gum the pieces once they are in.

For shoes we have the Robeez, they are soft soled and I love them.

We are getting ready to wean DS in about another week.  I am pregnant and I was supposed to be done BFing by 20 wks, but I wanted to get to a year.  I am going to slowly starting mixing some whole milk w/the breast milk in a sippy cup.  Once he is used to it.  I am going to drop one BFing session and replace it with whole milk.  I hope to have him completely weaned by 2 wks after his 1st b-day, so my Dr's will get off my back about it.

  • C eats almost exclusively finger food at this point - cheerio size pieces is a good way to describe it.  A little bigger if it is something really soft.

C has to wear shoes at daycare now that he can walk so he usually wears Pediped Originals (soft bottom) but has a pair of Robeez Mini Shoez (their spelling, not mine) with lightly rubberized bottom. I'm switching to the Pediped Grip N Go soon because he is walking a good bit now and I wanted something he could wear on wet ground.

C only nurses in the AM.  I pump at work twice per day and he gets that in sippies or bottles.  He gets a bottle again of BM before bed.  Once we hit a year, I will transition to soy (milk allergy) for the daytime milk and keep nursing him in the AM as long as I can.  If I need to, I'll pump the other side before work and give that before bed.  In our DC, he cannot have BM past one year (new classroom), otherwise I would keep BFing for longer.

  • Some of our routine table food is: fresh fruit, steamed veggies, cut up meat, cheese, whole wheat toast, pasta, yogurt, scrambled eggs. Then snacks like cheerios, puffs, etc.

I feed DS mini waffles & either break them up into pieces, or give him the whole thing & he rips off pieces himself.

Most food is cut up into bight sized pieces...like dime-sized, I guess?

For shoes, DS right now has 2 pairs of stride rites - one pair of sneakers that are his everyday shoes & one dressier pair. He also just got a pair of black Nike Shox as a gift. He is size 4.

I don't have a set in stone plan for weaning other than going to at least 12 months. I'll play it by ear, but most likely replace daytime nursing sessions with cow's milk & just nurse morning & night till 15 months, maybe?

DS still wakes once around 3 am & I BF him.

  • 1) we have been behind on foods this whole time but DS is a good eater so we try to move forward with it. He can handle pretty decently large pieces because he bites of chunks and chews well. But if the food is not amenable to chewing with gums then he either spits it out or never swallows it and I have to fish it out later (this has happened 2-3x when we've stupidly fed him something he just can't eat.) So as long as you don't feed your child something like that you should be ok. The examples were pear (because once we gave him really ripe pear and it worked; the other times the pear pieces did not dissolve enough), a certain kind of bread, and edamame cut up.

    2) we have some softish soled ones. DS is standing but not walking, but he has been playing outdoors at daycare for months now and they told us a while ago that we needed shoes. When he outgrows the ones he has now I think we will go with hard soles because I think he will be walking very soon.

    3) We BF and don't see weaning any time soon. We nurse all day on weekends, in the morning 2x before work and in the evening once. I also pump at work about 2x. I would like to stop pumping so we might cut that back after 1 year. I want to see if DS takes to WCM ok. If he does then we can cut BFing back so I don't have to pump. But if not I will keep doing it. I do not see cutting out the rest of BFing for quite a while, though. However, I do need to travel for work some this winter and spring. I just came back from a trip and the pumping & milk transport was a pain. So for that reason I might wean sooner. Probably by May, because in May there is a definite big work trip.

  • Right now we feed DD a mix.  She gets 1 jar of  table food a meal and then pieces of what DH and I are eating, usually cat to the size of cheerios, but it depends.

DD currently has a pair of stride rite early walkers which are really nice and are flexible to help her walk.  She's been walking for about 3 weeks now, so she uses them alot.  We're probably going to be getting her new pair of the "off and running" style in the next size up pretty soon.

I am planning to wean right after Christmas.  Since she started STTN about a month ago my supply has been tanking and DD seems less and less interested in nursing, so I think that it is time.  I was totally not ready to consider weaning 6 weeks ago, but I've changed my mind since then.  DD isn't even nursing to sleep anymore (by her choice!)
