when are you moving out of the infant car-seat?

DD is crazy tall and ALMOST at the height max for her infant seat..  was thinking about moving her to a (rear-facing, of course) convertible soon. We moved our son around 6 mts, too (for being so tall)...  are there any reasons to keep her in an infant seat longer? I asked our pedi, and she said not really.

(fwiw, we do plan to do extended rear-facing.. we kept our son rear-facing til age 2, and it was no big deal at all)

Re: when are you moving out of the infant car-seat?

  • We switched to the convertible a couple of weeks ago.

Scout - It took my daughter a couple of car rides to get use to the new car seat and get comfortable enough to fall asleep in it.  You might want to do some test drives before your big drive.  We found this out on a three hour drive that we assumed LO would sleep through.  Nope, she was super fussy because she wasn't use to the seat.  Could also just be my extremely picky child as well.

  • Yeah, we'll switch him into a convertible when he hits the height max, too. DS is tall, too -- he's 28" already so he would have maxed out of some seats. Luckily, I got a seat with a big height max (32"), so I should at least be able to use the infant seat through the winter. I don't haul him around in it and we never had a snap-n-go stroller, but it'll be easier to get him strapped in and layer blankets on him inside and then just rush him out to the driveway.

  • We switched about a month ago.  LO was already 19lbs (weight limit was 23lbs) & I could tell she was just plain uncomfortable in it.  She would fuss a lot in the infant seat.  Since we have seitched her to the convertible car seat she hasn't been fussing.

  • We need to switch soon, too, but I'm so indecisive. I don't know what to get. Price is a factor as is my small early-80s model Honda Accord lol.

  • My girls were 25.5 and 26 inches at their six month appointments, so I think we've got another month or so.  Our pedi said that based on their growth curves, if they stay the same, they'll hit 29 inches right around 9 months.  We'll probably swith them around 8 months to be on the safe side.

While lugging around two infant seats is getting very heavy, I haven't quite figured out logistically how I'm going to handle DC drop-off and pick up when I have to take the girls out of their seats.

  • My kid is a peanut. She's 10th percentile for height and weight.  At this rate, she'll be in an infant seat well into her toddler years!

I'll probably wait till 11 months or the next big Britax sale, whichever comes first.

ETA: Actually, I have no idea if I'll wait till 11 months or not.  My guess is she'll still meet the car seat 30/30 height/weight parameters but will she be comfortable?  I guess I'll play it by ear.

  • We switched when DD was about 5 months because we were going on a long road trip (15 hours) and thought it would be more comfortable for her, but we continued to use the infant seat in DH's car.

She is still under the height / weight requirements, but she looks so much more comfortable in the convertible seat, so we switched her over to a convertible seat in DH's car just a few weeks ago too.

  • We didn't switch our oldest until 15 months or so and that was because he was close to the height limit. I'm hoping to wait until at least a year with the twins since we should have our tax return by then and it won't hurt as much to buy two new, expensive seats. Also, one of our seats expires in June (it was our oldest's seat) and I want to get as much time out of it before we have to destroy it/trade it in towards a new one.

  • I want DS in there as long as possible. I wish he would make it through the winter. I think it will be easier just to out a blanket over him rather than messing with getting him in the seat in the cold weather, making sure his coat isn't too bulky, etc. I love just plopping him in the cart when he falls asleep. Quick in and out errands are much easier with the snap n go, rather than taking him ou and putting him back in. All in all, I love the bucket even if he is getting heavy. I imagine he'll be out by 9 months given his current length,

  • imageScout2005:

In the next few weeks -- we have a long car trip for Thanksgiving, and I think she'll be a lot more comfortable in her convertible. I want to get it installed and inspected before the trip.

eta: I love our infant seat, but the only real advantage - once they aren't nbs anymore - is the ability to carry the bucket inside if baby falls asleep. DD is so heavy at this point, hauling her around in that thing is useless.

I will miss being able to snap it into our stroller, though, so she can face me. Shopping is going to get more complicated for a little while, she's not quite ready to sit in the cart.  (She refuses to be worn, so I bring her stroller and carry a basket.)

I just ordered a cart cover from amazon called the prop r shopper. it has 2 removeable pillows for the sides, to help support them :)

  • probably not till LO is around 1.  It's a big carrier (the safety 1st brand) and she can stay in it until she's 35lbs. She's only 15 currently.

  • We just installed the convertible earlier today.  LO hasn't ridden in it yet, but we'll see how it goes later this afternoon!

While LO had room to grow on the weight limit, he was getting close on the height and starting to seem uncomfortable.

  • We just installed ours today. DD was looking really squished in her chicco keyfit, so we thought lets do it now before her clothes get even bulkier as the colder weather approaches.
