Is anyone considering cloth diapers?

It seems to be much more economical in the long run, but I'm just not sure that I can do it. My husband is strongly opposed, but I think I might like to try. What do you guys think?

Re: Is anyone considering cloth diapers?

  • I think we'll stick with disposables, it's just easier. I recycle a lot normally so I don't feel too bad about using disposables. It just seems a lot cleaner. ;)

  • I cloth diaper my 14 month old and I'll definitely cloth diaper the next one. :)  It really isn't has gross/difficult as it seems.  We use a diaper sprayer with a Spray Pal and do laundry every other day.  We started when DD was 3 months because she was blowing out of all her disposables, so we were doing tons of extra laundry anyways.  We haven't had a poop blowout since we switched!

If you have any questions about it, I'd be happy to try to help.  Also, the cloth diapering board on the left is a great resource.  That's where I went when I got started.  I highly recommend doing a cloth diaper trial before you buy a bunch so you'll know what works on your LO.  I did a trial for $10 at Jillian's Drawers.  HTH!

ETA:  In response to the cleanliness, it really isn't as gross as it seems.  And we feel better about putting the cloth on my little girl's bottom that the chemicals in the disposables.  Also, while it does feel good not to toss a paper diaper in the trash after every change, many people will say that the environmental impact is equal whether you CD or not because of the extra water you use.  Whether or not that's true, you can't deny the monetary savings.  I spent about $550 on my stash, and I'll use it the entire time my daughter is in diapers, plus the next little one that comes.

  • Definitely considering it - I have a friend who used them and loved it.
  • I told H that if I am SAHM after #2 I'd be interested in trying it. If I'm still working, we'll stick with disposables.

To be honest though, diapers haven't been a huge cost for us just through smart shopping: stocking up during sales, using coupons and deals, etc. SIL did some deal through Amazon for us and we're getting a free box of Luvs every month for a year right now. But DD grows extremely slowly so we can buy for a few months ahead without worry too.

  • That trial on Jillians Drawers looks very promising! I think I may have to try that out! Thanks for the great info!

  • We're actually thinking about going with a company called G Diapers

They are earth friendly diapers.  There is the outside diaper part that you  re-use, and you change out the inside part.  PLUS the inside part that you change out can be flushed down the toilet, or put into your compost.

They're a little pricey compared to disposables, but we like that we don't have to clean it (like clothes), and are being a little more  earth friendly.

  • I swore I would never cloth diaper...then DD started having blowouts every day! Talk about gross! We switched brands several times and tried different sizes, it didn't help at all. Honestly, as someone who hated even the idea of cloth diapers, it's not nearly as bad or as gross as I thought it would be. I think it was easier when DD was a newborn to use disposables. It saved us from buying newborn CDs and I had time to adjust and get into a routine of being a mom before tackling learning how to CD. We went on vacation recently and used disposables...I was reminded very quickly why we switched to CDs. I don't think there's anything wrong with using disposables, but they just aren't easier for everyone. I would also be happy to answer any questions.
  • We also plan to cloth diaper. At first DW was against it and thought it was gross. She came around after reading info about the cost compared to the cost of disposables. We've watched some tutorials on youtube and plan to attend an intro to cloth diapering workshop. So far it doesn't look that difficult, I'm actually looking forward to buying cute little diaper covers lol.

  • I might consider if it we had a washer/dryer, but we don't.  We rent in NYC and don't have laundry in the building; we use a laundromat several blocks away.  Too much work for diapers!

  • we are! i am really looking into Best Bottom Diapers!!! they sound so amazing! they will save us so much money (especially since you can use them on future kids too), and since all our utilities are included in our rent, it will REALLY save us money!
  • It is definitely something we are considering since I am going to be SAH. I'm definitely curious. Thanks who ever posted about the Cloth Diapering board, for some reason I never noticed that one!

  • We use fuzzibunz om our two little boys and I love it! They are easy and no where near as yucky as I had imagined. With a diaper sprayer they are easy to clean and I'm so happy those harsh chemicals aren't on my babies' bums. Over the past six months we've traveled a lot and used some sposies, and we've only spent $124 to diaper two boys! Such a savings and much better for baby!

  • I'm about 90% set on using cloth diapers. I love the idea of the cost savings, fewer blowouts, and fewer diaper rashes. Plus, I'll never have to run to the store at midnight because we are running low on diapers.

Dh wasn't too keen on the idea at first, but after explaining how easy they are to use, he's coming around to the thought. I just ordered some as a baby shower gift for a friend who wants to cloth diaper, and I think that seeing them will be the final selling point for dh.

For anyone thinking about using them, can you talk to someone who has already? I helped  cloth diaper some siblings and volunteered at an orphanage where we changed 30 babies 7 times a day. I still never considered using them myself until a friend cloth diapered. She took time to show me her diapers and explain her decision, and it has been in the back of my mind ever since.

    Mommy to N (3), J (2), and C (10 months). LO4 is due in mid-September.
  • I will definitely be cloth diapering.  I'm excited about it and have already started doing research - I'm a total planner. lol

  • I cloth diaper (and do elimination communication- "infant potty training") with my first. There are so many benefits. The impact on the environment is huge, cd babies potty train faster and my son has never had a rash (perhaps unrelated) I told myself the both my parents and my husbands parents cd ( we didnt have a lot of $ growing up, dh grew up in Russia) so it must be doable. I got dh to sign on by making sure he knew that if it was too hard, we would stop. We use disposables at daycare (they wont cd) and when we go out for an average of 3-4 disposables per day. Still not the best for the environment but a good middle ground. Please let me know if you have any questions.

  • I am also hoping to cloth diaper.  I am going to SAH, and will probably be the main diaper changer in the house, and I actually think that cloth diapers sound less gross than disposables.  One of my friends blogged about cloth diapering her son, and it got me really excited about it. I have also been lurking on the cloth diapering board here- there is a lot of good information out there.  The only thing I am wondering is if I will cloth diaper from the newborn stage, or if I will start after the baby grows a little.

  • I will certainly consider it. I think it I need to do more research on it first. It seems more economical, but my husband gags at everything! So the extra step might be difficult for him.

  • We'll definitely cloth diaper. It's great for the environment, the baby, and the wallet. I've already started my stash so that we can accumulate slowly and won't feel the upfront cost as strongly.

  • I'm about 95% sure we will cloth diaper. My best friends daughter is cloth diapered, I've babysat her a ton. So, they're something I'm used to. I think the cost in the long run is worth it, better for a babies skin (IMO) and they're cuuuuute.  We may use disposables when traveling, or in cases such as that.

  • We cloth diaper our son who's 14 months and will be cloth diapering the new baby as well. Jordan got really bad rashes from the disposables, even the swaddlers sensitives. We just decided to take the plunge. We spent around $300, and it's been working out great for us. My husband wasn't sure at first but now he's totally for it.  The only people that don't really want to deal with it are the grandparents. My MIL doesn't really want to learn how to use them and my mom doesn't care to learn either. I'm hoping they warm up to it more with the new baby because I am not buying disposables for 2 babies just to have their grandparents watch them.

  • We're going to cloth diaper but going to use a service for the pre folds so we don't have to do the laundry, at least in the beginning when they're pooping and peeing every 5 seconds.  I think once the baby gets bigger and poops/pees less often we'll wash our own.  As for traveling, on the dirty diaper laundry site, she arranged for the local diaper service to deliver diapers to her hotel!  So I think we'll do the same when we travel.  I think we'll get a few pre folds to have initially.  If we did wash our own from day 1, I'm waiting until the meconium stage is gone.  That stuff is nasty to try to clean up!

  • we cloth diaper our dd and will continue to cloth diaper #2.

i think we have saved tons, and i love it.

up until about six months or so  we used prefolds and covers.  she is now in pockets.  we use bumgenius and fuzzbunz and love them.

  • yep! we did with dd. my husband was hesitant, but now he is the one telling people about them!

    we used bumgenius.

besides all the benefits listed, they also kids train easier. we had the organic kind so she felt when she was wet, it didn't wick away.

she was showing signs of being ready for so long, and right after her 2nd birthday she was done with diapers!

i had a huge post about them too, i can help with any questions also!

  • I am absolutely doing cloth diapers. I won't even consider using disposables. Then again I'm a bit of a hippie child and I'm big on things being all natural and sustainable. :)
  • I plan on cloth diapering. I think I'm going to try fuzzi bunz. They have one size or fitted so there is a nice range to choose from.

  • I'm so glad you mentioned this and SO glad there are so many families considering this! I had never considered it until DH mentioned that of his five siblings, he was the only one that was in disposables and thought we should look into it (or at least some combination of cloth/disposable). We haven't done a lot of research into it yet, but I'm definitely looking forward to hearing what you ladies have to say about it. I can't seem to find anyone who went CD and regretted it.
