C-sections

No internals for a scheduled c-section?

This is my first c-section, and I was surprised to find that they never once did an internal.  Is it because I have a scheduled c-section?  Not that I wanted to be violated like that or anything, but they are telling me the baby is big & I could go in to labor before my scheduled date, & it kinda would have put my mind at ease to know if I was dilated at all or not, especially since I've been having contractions for 7 weeks, and she has been fully engaged (every time I have an appointment, they say "wow, she's really wedged in there!") for almost 3 weeks....

  • Same here, I have a planned c-section and my weekly appointments haven't included anything internal.  I agree, it's been so nice not having to worry about that!!

  • I had one and frankly, after I got home and really thought about it, I really wondered why!

  • I've had them but I've had issues with pre-term labor since 31 weeks so she's trying to make sure nothing more is happening.  Otherwise, I would love to not endure them!

  • I had internals starting a couple of weeks before my scheduled c/s. It was NBD to me either way.

  • My OB doesn't do them for c-sections. Once you are past 37 weeks then if you go into labor you just come to the hospital and have your c-section. There isn't really a point, especially since you can be dilated for weeks before going into actual labor and actually it's kind of nice not to have to get them this time I think!
  • My C section wasn't scheduled until I was 38 weeks and I never had an internal before or after the C section date was set.

  • Internals don't tell you if you are going to go into labor soon.  Some women walk around 3 or 4 cm dilated for weeks and others are at 0 and have their baby that same day.

  • I never had them with DS2 and will not have themt his time. There is no point and if I went into labor before my c/s date then they would have just taken me straight to the OR for my c/s

  • I never heard this, my first c/s wasn't planned. However, I will push for them b/c I was put on bedrest at 30 weeks with my DS because not only was I dialated but I was 80% effaced, so I could open up quickly at any time. And it continued to progress in the weeks to follow.

I think it is still important to get the internals (before 37 weeks). I know that if I wasn't checked when I was and kept working I would have most certainly had my son earlier than I did. c/s or vaginally you still want your baby to be his/her healthiest.

  • At my initial appointment this time, they said they would do an internal along with the group B strep test at 36 weeks, then no more after that since I am planing a RCS.

  • I had a planned c/s and never had an internal beforehand either. My OB said it wasn't really a good predictor of labor anyway. Looking back, I wish I had one out of curiosity because I was 5cm an hour after my water broke! I'd be curious to know if I was already somewhat dilated or if that all happened that quickly. But according to my OB internals are not really that important for non high risk pregnancies, even if you are not having a c/s.
