C-sections

C sections for breech babies...why were they breech?

I had a C section due to my LO being breech.  I found out that he was breech at my 32 week appointment and had several ultra sounds in the following weeks that continued to confirm this.  He was still breech at 38 weeks so a c section was scheduled for 39 weeks 1 day.  I didn't have another ultrasound between 38 weeks and delivery.  I felt alot of movement at the end of 38 weeks that I thought was him turning but the doctors felt around right before delivery and stated that he hadn't turned but didn't do another US.  I find myself wondering if he had possibly turned.  I never thought to ask at the hospital or my follow up if he was definatley breech at delivery and if there were any reasons for this (ie, short cord, wrapped cord, malformation in the uterus).  Would this be recorded in my medical records?  Did any of you recieve information as to why your LO was breech?  I understand that some babies are breech with no explaination but many times it is due to other factors.

Re: C sections for breech babies...why were they breech?

  • My baby was head down for a good time, but then flipped further along in my pregnancy.  I had a large uterine fibroid and she was already quite big, so the possibility of her flipping back was low.  They did another u/s right before i went into my scheduled csection per my request.  My doctor said she would have just induced labor if the baby had flipped since she didn't want me going into labor at home with my fibroid issues.

  • My girl keeps going back and forth from breech to head down. Every week at our growth ultrasound she is a different position! We have to do a c-section no matter what because of placenta previa, and I do think that this issue influences her position. I think she wants to be head down, but her placenta is in the way so her head can't even engage.

  • My LO was breech for as long as I can remember. When my dr. & I discussed scheduling a c-section (I was 35 wks, 2 days when we decided to schedule it), she told me that the morning of the c-section they would do an ultrasound to make sure LO was still breech before the surgery. If she wasn't breech, no c-section. My water broke at 35 wks, 5 days; just like she said she would, my dr. performed an ultrasound that morning & LO was still breech, so the c-section was still on.

My c-section was scheduled for when I was 39 wks, 1 day. LO decided she wanted to come sooner.

I was never told why she might be breech & I didn't ask. I did have a low-lying placenta, but it did move. Aside from PIH starting at 32 wks & going on bed rest at 33 wks, my pregnancy was uneventful. We did have an Rh incompatibility to deal with when LO came, but the issue has resolved (blood work every 2 weeks for the first 3 months to monitor hemoglobin level).

  • DD turned heads down at 30 weeks.  I went into the hospital, and they decided to break my water at 39 weeks.  During that, we discovered she was breech.  Now that I know she was, I am pretty certain she turned a week before, I was having a lot of stomach pains that day.

OB never told me why it happened, he said it just happens, lol.  But DD was really small, so I would assume that was why.

  • I found out at 38 weeks that my baby was breech after going for a fetal assessment ultrasound. The doctor thought he had been head down the entire time but I sort of figured the baby was breech because of where I was feeling all of the movement. While they were doing my c-section they informed me that I have a mild bicornuate uterus which is most likely why he was unable to turn.

  • My LO was breech just b/c she was.  But she didn't flip most likely b/c she was a footling breech.  She had one leg tucked up but one down keeping herself from turning.  Your records should indicate that you had a c/s due to a breech presentation but whether they noted if she actually was when your were opened up I don't know.  My dr did an u/s himself in the hospital right before she was born to make sure of her position.  Before he knew she was coming foot first he thought she could turn even in labor.

  • I never asked why he was breech, but I was hooked up to an u/s after I went into labor when I was in triage to confirm he was still breech. He had gone from frank breech to transverse, but I had no fluid left, and he didn't seem to be moving any more than that, so we did the c/s. Hoping it isn't anything to do with my ute shape or anything, and that this LO will get her head down!!

  • My LO was footling breech at 36 weeks and flipped the night before 37 week scan. It all still ended in a c-section. Now this LO is breech and doesn't seem to have any intentions of moving. I am starting to wonder about my delivery abilities.

  • For most breech babies, there is no real reason, other than they happened to be that way when they ran out of room to turn.

I had no uterine anomalies, his cord wasn't short, he wasn't huge, tangled in the cord, etc. My fluid levels were a little low toward the end, so if I had to guess I would say I was a little dehydrated and he just ran out of room.

If there WAS a definite reason, it would probably be in your medical record or the surgical report.

  • Apparently she just liked it. I asked my OB after he delivered her if there had been any cord issues that kept her from turning, but he confirmed that absolutely nothing was preventing her from being in proper position. She just wasn't.

DD1 was head-down most of the third tri and delivered vaginally, so I know that she *could* have gotten positioned correctly. But DD2 was breech from 30 weeks on and breech position was confirmed before my c/s; despite trying a lot of things to get her to turn.

  • My baby was transverse breech (meaning she wanted to come out head first but sideways - instead of the skinny part of her head, it was the wide part).  No one knew my baby was breech until they got me into the operating room after laboring for 15 hours and pushing for 6 of those.

  • My LO was breech because I have a bicornuate uterus with a partial septum (about an inch and a half).  We had no idea until the surgery that I had these two uterine abnormalities. DD was trapped up (I carried so high) in one side and had stopped growing at 35 weeks (born at 5lbs) but she stayed in full term! We have been told we are lucky to have made it full term with those two uterine abnormalities... My risk of breech babies is 50-60%.

  • My LO was breech because I have a bicornuate uterus as well. This was suspected early on and confirmed during my c/s. I guess I'm one of the few that had an explanation for the breech presentation!

  • DS turned breech 5 days before my due date.  My doctor was amazed that it happened because they estimated that he was almost 8 pounds.  Well when he was born weighing 5lbs 12oz, everyone was shocked and my doctor said that his small size is what allowed him to flip so late in the game.
  • My first was breech. They performed a c-section when I started dialating at almost 38 weeks, and the ob said he could feel her foot when he did an internal.

They found I had a septate uterus, the septum was down the whole way so I had two halves. My second delivery was done at 24 weeks bc of a placental abruption due to trying the placental growing onto the septum but was unable to attach. After they delivered my son the dr performed surgery to remove the septum. He said he removed it all but about a half an inch at the top where it was too thick and would've caused too much bleeding.

Anyway, they told me right away, so it seems like that would be important info your dr would give to right away, if there was any issue going on.

Hope you're able to get some answers :)
