Red strings in poo?

I let DS try some banana for the first time yesterday, and the last two poos he's had since then have lots of little red fibers or strings in them. DH googled it and found that little black stringies can be from eating banana, but these are definitely bright red. There's also a ton of them, and he only tried a little banana. Is this normal, or do you think he might be reacting to the banana? Thanks!

Re: Red strings in poo?

  • does your dr office have an advice nurse hotline? i would call asap. save the diaper to show your pedi

  • When I found red strings of blood in my son's poop, it was because he had a milk intolerance.

  • It's probably just the banana, but call your pedi to be safe.
  • Well I'm not a doc, but when I saw the subject my first reaction was "bananas".  Obviously that's not super helpful, but for DS it wasn't anything.

  • that sounds more like blood.  Does he have a diaper rash?  My DS had some really bad diarrhea and I saw thin threads of red in his poop and it ended up being blood from some little tears.  :(  It went away within the day.

I wouldn't rule out an allergy though, definitely take a good pic or save the diaper and call your pedi!  There would be no explanation for a banana making him poop fibers, especially if they are red!
