How soon did your LO open their eyes?

I honestly never thought anything about it at the time, but now it seems weird seeing other peoples' pics of NBs. DS didn't really open his eyes until 2 days after he was born, and even then it was really limited. He didn't really even peek/squint before then! I was curious whether it was the meds or whether this is common and I'm just seeing random bright-eyed newborns making me think otherwise.

Re: How soon did your LO open their eyes?

  • Mine had her eyes wide open right from the start. All her first pics at the hospital she was very alert. I thought it was kind of strange since I've always seen NBs with their eyes closed, she was just a very alert baby.

  • She was squinting and blinking around in the OR the second the dr held her up.  She'd open them as far as she wanted to in the bright surgical light.  Babies are usually very alert right after birth and about an hour later start with their sleepiness.  If you didn't see yours much in the first hour you might have just missed that period.  I only saw DD at that moment and in pics of her in the OR before she went to the NICU.  After that it was all nap time!

  • No, we never left each other's sight. I even went back and looked at the bajillion c/s, OR pics and nothing!

  • Judah opened his eyes as soon as they put him on my chest.  He was a very alert newborn and is still wide eyed most of the time at 5 months!

  • DS1 was an awake baby from the beginning. There was no sleepy newborn phase at all but he also came out looking like a 1 month old. By day 3 if you laid him on his belly he could already pick up his head.

DS2 was definitely a sleepy newborn and barely was awake at the hospital. The first 8 weeks I had to constantly remind myself he was just a sleepy newborn unlike his brother.

  • They were open when they gave her to me a couple of minutes after she was born.  The doctor was surprised at how alert and focused she was when she was just a day or two old.

  • DD's eyes were open from the get go.  Everyone kept saying how alert she was!
