Anyone's 3yr old in speech?

Today my son's preschool teacher asked me if it would be ok for my son to see the speech therapist. I said sure go ahead, my husband has been thinking my son needs it anyway. I'm just not sure what they are going to do? Has anyone used a speech therapist?

Re: Anyone's 3yr old in speech?

  • My son takes speech. He was evaluated last year at my insistence and now sees an SLP twice a week (once at home, once at the school). It's very play based. He loves it and has gotten a lot out of it. I sit in at least once a week so that I can do follow up activities at home.

  • Harmon is.  They sit and play games together.  I just observed a session on Wednesday.  She works on things but Harmon never suspects b/c they are having so much fun :)

  • the speech therapist should talk to you and let you know what's going on. they should also give you things to do at home....or ways to model.
  • My DD has been seeing a ST since she turned two.  For the first year we used the state's early intervention program and she met with a therapist weekly in our home.  At 3 she aged out of the program and she is no in the school systems program which is once a week for 30 minutes in a group setting.  We have also just enrolled her in a private program once a week for 30 minutes.

They do such a great job at really helping to draw out the sounds and helping to child to imitate vocal cues.  My DD still has some pretty significant delays, but we are hopeful that by the time she enters Kindergarten she will be caught up with her peers.

I will stress the importance of having the parents involved.  You should be part of the lessons or at least a debrief with the ST so you can practice with your DS at home.  I was suprised at all the things I can do to help.  Initially it was just a lot of praise and affirmation that DD was doing a good job.  Now it has moved on to being consistent in reminding her to make her final sounds.

    Good luck!

  • grayson goes - he's been going since about 19mo - 2-3x's a week, and he's doing great.

i would try to NOT be at the lesson - because kids will often not do things with parents there that they will do for just the therapist/teacher.... but the therapist should give you a review after each lesson, and "homework" about things to work on in the coming days..... ie- certain sounds, etc.

Gray loves it- he gets one-on-one play time with an adult, which is rare for my 3 boys :)

  • My 5 year old has been in speech since she was 3 1/2 (is now 5).  I am surprised they didn't do an evaluation or anything?  I would not have my child in speech if I didn'/t have a clear understanding of why and what they are doing.  I personally would be asking a lot of questions.  Anyway, my DD is in speech for articulation issues.  Her class is set up like a preschool class.  They meet 2x a week for 90 mins each and the class has up to 8 kids with 2 therapists.  They play a lot of games, do crafts and have a snack and eveyrthing they do is related to a sound.  If they are working on say the "s" sounds 0 the them might be snow so they would do a project related to snow, have a snack that had the same sounds in it, sing sounds about snow.  They also have one on one time where they work on the sounds.  They teach the kids sound clues and how to put your tongue to make the sound.  My DD uses a mirror for some sounds and hand signals or is told to have your tongue touch your top teeth.  It is really great and very helpful.
