My ob has wanted to give me an internal at 36 weeks. I refused. I am on week to week apts and she asked again today to do one. I refused again asking the relevence of having one. She explained that if they need to induce using pitocin that my cervix would need to be open. Has anyone else been told this?
I feel I am beating this ob off my cervix with a stick. Its like she cant wait to get in there. Seriously. I don't plan on getting induced until 41 weeks anyway.
Re: Pitocin and cervical opening
Well she is right, you generally need to have made some progress on your own to do a Pit induction and not just end up with a c/s for failure to progress. If your cervix is not favorable for Pit, they usually use a prostaglandin like Cervidil or Cytotec to get you to the point where Pit could be started, but prostaglandins are usually not used for VBACs. They can also try using a Foley bulb for VBAC, because it does not increase rupture risk.
But it doesn't matter what your cervix is like now. It matters what it is like when they go to start the induction. You could be completely closed today and go into labor tomorrow. It's weird that your OB is trying to push an induction on you, since most OBs don't want to induce VBAC at all.
Do you feel like she is supportive of your desire to have a VBAC?
She is right. You do need to be at least slightly dilated to be favorable for an induction with pit. That said, I agree with pp that it is a non-issue until the day that you are actually getting induced.
FWIW, I was MAYBE a fingertip dilated when I was induced. They tried the foley but I wasn't dilated enough. My MW used pit to see if it would jumpstart anything because she knew I was only interested in a c/s if it was MEDICALLY necessary. The pit induction was successful and I VBACed with no issues.
