Missed period.

So I have always had a regular period, and I know that a woman's period arrival date is not something set in stone by any means - especially if you are a nursing mother - but I have never actually missed a period (that is, and not been pregnant) before.

I saw my OBGYN today who was not very concerned. I told him that even though I am currently nursing my 7 month old son, that since he's been born I have still maintained a regular period that comes on time every single month. Same thing with my daughter who is now 2, when I nursed her, I never missed a period nor was it irregular by any means.

I've been under a lot of stress this year, and that hasn't affected my period before, but I also have an anxiety disorder that has really been acting up a lot more than usual lately. So because of that, my appetite has been really poor, and I have not been eating as I should, and therefore have lost a ton of weight 40 lbs or so) in a two month period. I'm happy to have lost it, but feel really unhealthy.

My doctor's not concerned but I am, I miss having an appetite, and honestly not getting my period for a straight month is really freaking me out.

Re: Missed period.

  • Here's my suggestions:

Have a regular physical exam to rule out any underlying medical conditions

Make sure, even if you don't have an appetite, to eat something nutritious. Have a nutrition shake (like Ensure) if you really can't get anything else down. You need the calories and nutrients, not just for your breastfeeding baby, but also to help stabilize both the dramatic weight loss and reduce your stress.

Even though stress has not done this to you before, you mentioned that your anxiety is acting up, so maybe you've crossed a threshold that your body can handle

Get treated for your anxiety (please only rely on medications as a LAST RESORT. Anti anxiety meds dull the emotion but doesn't help you tolerate the discomfort of anxiety and learn to reduce it on your own. Find a good therapist that is versed in anxiety disorders and take up some relaxing activities.)

It really sounds like there are a few things at play with what's going on. Good luck and feel well.

  • My OB was not at all concerned when I had missed/irregular periods while nursing and said she wouldn't be concerned unless after 6 months after weaning I still wasn't getting a period.
