Babies: 6 - 9 Months

solids

There has to be a trick to this! I really don't remember solids being this hard with DD1, but DD2 straight out refuses. She's showing all the signs of being ready, but when I bring out the baby food, she shakes her head and purses her lips. Pedi says to keep on trying, but all I'm doing is making her angry by trying to shove a spoon in her mouth and delaying her bottle. Anybody have any tips they'd like to share?

Re: solids

  • Would she rather feed herself? You could look into baby-led weaning if she's more into being in charge.

I've tried to spoon feed LO and he's having none of it. I'm fine with that. He's much happier to play with his food, and I assume sometime in the next month or two he'll start eating some.

  • Are you feeding solids before or after her bottle?  I ask because you said "and delaying her bottle".  If you are feeding solids before her bottle - maybe try feeding the bottle first, waiting a 30-45 minutes, then trying solids.  That way she isn't starving and it might be more fun.  I also second the pp's suggestion that you let her try to use the spoon herself.  It might be messy, but it could get the ball rolling. Good luck!
  • When I started solid foods I would do it in between feedings so that she wasnt starving but wasnt full. It took a couple of weeks for her to learn that was food and would fill her up, now she prefers solids over her bottle.

She's not quite advanced enough to understand the whole concept of feeding herself & getting spoon to mouth. But I'll look into baby-led to get a few pointers. Like I said before, she's definitely giving me all the signs (which is why we started solids), but when the food comes out, it's like she changes her mind.

I'll try the in-between thing...maybe that will work.

& totally unrelated to this, but your daughter is GORGEOUS!!!
