Re: egg allergy flu shot or not flu shot

  • 2nd year of getting it at the allergist's office.  No way our pedi would do it.  He did fine both years. I may have skipped it, but he has been constantly sick with his asthma, so we decided to go for it.

  • DD is severely allergic to both egg whites and egg yolks, so we went to the allergist's office for her flu shot.  They did a skin test first and tested to see her reaction to egg whites, yolks,  and the flu vaccine itself.  She developed large welts from the egg white and yolk, but had zero reaction to the flu vaccine, so the allergist said to go ahead with the shot.  They gave her the vaccine in one shot and we waited in the exam room and watched The Little Mermaid for half an hour to make sure she didn't have a reaction.  She was fine and we went on our merry way.

I kept going back and forth about whether or not to give her the flu shot, given her allergies, but I felt comfortable with the way they did it at the allergist's office.  Ditto pp, the regular pedi wouldn't handle that, it needs to be done at the allergist's office.  I'm glad we had it done.

  • We did a gradual shot last year (got 1/2 of it over like 2 hours and then went back another day for the other 1/2) and he did fine.  There's less egg in it this year than last year.  We're going to give him the shot in the pedi's office this time when I take my youngest for his visit in a few weeks.

Honestly- if he didn't have such bad asthma I'd skip it completely.

  • We're getting his done at the allergist next week. Our doc also told us that there's much less egg particles in this years vaccine so she wasn't as concerned. He was a preemie & I can't risk not getting it for him.

  • We're skipping it since his egg allergy is at level 5.

But if it was lower, we'd consider.  So depends on how severe is his allergy and either way -do it at the doctors office.

  • We are skipping it.

  • I have a moderate egg allergy--I don't get it

DS1 has a severe egg allergy--- we skipped it every year

DS2 is unknown yet so we're skipping it.

They are both in daycare and DS1 is also in public school--so it'll be risky but I'll do the best we can to keep them healthy.

  • Our allergist gave our pediatrician a protocol to follow so DS would get the flu shot.  We gave benadryl 30 minutes before per the allergist, then he received 1/20th of the shot.  We waited and he had a raised welt where the shot was administered.  Our pediatrician made the decision to not administer the rest of the shot.  Our allergist suggested coming in and they would administer it in small doses- up to 15 needle sticks.  We opted to just skip the shot this year.
