Transition from sleeping in arms/on you to crip/PnP, etc.

When did you make this transition and how? Just keep trying to put them down? DD will nap for hours on us, but 20-40 min. in RnP. She won't sleep in the swing or bouncer. Tips? Hope? Anecdotes? Empathy? Will she sleep on us until college? ;)

  • I let her fall asleep in my arms, but I make sure she is swaddled, so she won't wake up from the abrupt temperature change from our arms to the cold swing/pack n play

  • Yes, much empathy for you. My baby wakes up everytime I move him. I'm so sleep deprived I have been doing things like putting cereal boxes in the refrigerator..

I'm going to try the swaddling thing the person above me suggested. Something's eventually got to work.

  • It'll get better with time.  LO rarely falls asleep on me now.

  • Much empathy from over here- we have the same problem.  I keep telling myself that I don't see many toddlers that have to sleep on their mothers chest so eventually this should end.  FWIW, it is getting a little better- we're spending more time sleeping in the swing/bassinet than we did last week, which was more than the week before.  Sometimes the gains are so small you don't really notice them, but they're still there.

  • Swaddling and white noise have helped us.

  • Definitely give white noise a try.  Sometimes, if DD is extra fussy I have to turn it up really loud to get her to calm down and then I adjust the volume after she falls asleep to a lower setting.

My only other advise is to stick with it and be consistent.  DD has always slept great in RnP at night, but I got into the habit of letting her nap in my arms during the day.  The past few days, I've started putting her in the RnP for naps as well and she wakes up after about 30-45 minutes and then doesn't want to be put down when I try to soothe her.  It's rough at the moment but I know it'll get better in a week or two and it'll be better for both of us.

    This.

It is helpful for us to keep her warm.

  • Put down over & over & over again.  I never allowed DS to sleep on me for an extended period, so when he got tired enough he'd stay sleeping where I was trying to put him.
