another S/O- leaving DD when I go to deliver #2

All these posts have made me realize I have NO idea who we'll leave DD with when I go to the hospital to deliver LO # 2.

DD is a pretty good sleeper, IF she has ME to do her winddown routine.  If I am not at home, she'll do okay with DH.  However, no one else has ever put her to bed.  I think we need to start working on this now!

Also, last time around my mom and my sister were at the hospital with DH and I.  My Dad can't keep DD because he has a disability that would prevent him from being able to care for her.  DHs parents are minimally involved and I don't think DD would do very well by herself with either of them.

We need to figure this out soon and come up with a plan.

  • Maybe your mom and sister wouldn't both be @ the hospital this time?

My parents watched DD in our house (they took her out to dinner.) We left them the keys to the car w/ both carseats in it and then traded when it was time to come home w/ DS. I really wanted that car ride home to be the 4 of us, so DD would feel like she was bringing her little brother home.

  • Ava stayed with my mom at her house both nights and DS stayed at my MIL's house (she works where he goes to school so it was easier).  The day I went into labor though, MIL stayed with both kids so my mom could be with me for labor and delivery (yes I'm one of the one who likes my mom there..ha ha). I had Faith in the evening so the mom's just did the "exchange" at the hospital.

I would definitely do a test run or two with your mom or whoever before the big day. It might be easier for them if they just stayed at your house.

  • We had my dad come down here and stay with Sean overnight and all of the next day. (I got called in for an emergency induction at 9:30 at night, so luckily DS was already in bed and my dad just had to come sleep here and wait for him to wake up). it worked out really well. i don't know how easily he would have gone to bed for my dad.

  • Can you designate either your mom or sister, or someone else you feel comfortable with to take care of DD? I would do a few over nights, I think our kids are much more adaptable than we give think. A few times of either your mom or sister putting her to bed she should be ok, and less stress for you when you go to have baby #2

  • If you can't work it out with family, do you have a trusted babysitter?  For one of the families I used to sit for regularly, I watched the toddler overnight and took her to daycare when they delivered their second.  It worked pretty well.

Oh ditto this- when I lived in NYC I was the night call person for the 3 yr old I baby sat, if the mom went into labor w/ baby #2 at night. They had a nanny and the plan was for me to just go and stay there for the night and then leave in the morning when the nanny came. They didn't end up needing me, but I was the night time plan person.

W/ DS we had multiple neighbors offer to watch DD if it was the middle of the night, etc- but we are close w/ a lot of our neighbors.

  • Aiden stayed with close friends of ours.  When Claire had to be readmitted due to jaundice, he stayed with our dcp (we let him choose at that point since things were so crazy).

  • I think my aunt or stepmom will watch DD when LO#2 comes. My family is not making any plans for March or April to be out of town.

  • Can you start now letting either your mom or sister watch DD?  Maybe go out to dinner and let them put her to bed a few times.  I know it would be a huge inconvience for you and DH to go out to dinner and maybe a movie ( Stick out tongue ) but it would be good practice for DD to let someone else have a shot at putting her to bed.
