Having a bit of a mental delema here. Can you folks help a bit?
Due to some major income changes I am going to be changing doctors in the next week. My previous Doctor didnt seem to have a major opinion either way about VBAC. So I feel a bit lost.
I had a C-section last time because the cord was wrapped around my daughters neck and she was in distress about 5 minutes after my epidural. The scar is very low on the abdomen.
This time around, some minor preterm contractions when I am on my feet to long. Nothing the doctors felt needed medication or full bed rest for.Making this a rather medium risk pregnancy. But, baby also has a cleft lip/palete. So she is going to have special needs after birth.
My worry: Do I try for a natural birth this time and risk the same emergency as before? Or do I schedule the c-section, get the spinal and deal with the longer recovery?
Also, I want to trust the medical industry. Many of my family work in the field. But, I am hearing so much negative regarding the c-section rate and what the medications/painkillers can do.
Apparently after a CS they knock you out to clean you up. Because the epidural, spinal and then the knock out meds were administered so close together I was unconcious for an extremely long time. The hospital was worried because I wasnt waking up. What about my daughter? What did the epidural and spinal pain killers do to her???? What might the meds do to this little girl?
What do I do?
Re: To VBAC or not....?
I think you should talk to your new doctor about this because there are some extenuating circumstances that most of us aren't familiar with. I'd imagine a cleft palate would not be a problem in a VBAC, but I am really not sure and if there are other issues on top of that, it might swing the pendulum.
Also, knocking you out after the c/s is NOT regular procedure. I have never heard of that before? I was completely awake with just the spinal when they were putting me back together after my c/s. Is there a medical reason why they put you under?
I've never heard of people being routinely knocked out for part of the c/s. Are you sure that is routine? I've only heard of that being done if the spinal/epidural is not working right and the mother is in pain.
As for the contractions you are having when you are on your feet too much, they are not just Braxton Hicks? I had a lot of those in my first pregnancy and they do not mean you will need a c/s.
I don't know much about cleft palate and what it means for delivery. Have you talked to your OB or pediatrician about it?
The issue with your daughter's cord is very unlikely to happen again if you decide to try for a VBAC. In fact, people who had a c/s for reasons that have to do with the baby (e.g. fetal distress, breech presentation) have the highest odds for having a successful VBAC. So just something for you to consider as you make your decision. GL.
I agree with the others - I've never heard of someone being knocked out after a c-section for routine cleanup. I was loopy, but awake during the whole c-section. Was there possibly a more serious situation going on?
One of my closest friends delivered her son vaginally, and he was born with a cleft lip and palate. There were no other complications besided that fact that he was born at 36 weeks, and had to be monitored in the NICU for a few extra days. Hopefully your new doc is VBAC friendly, and you can go for it!
