For those that use vinegar in wash routine

So most places that I have read that suggest vinegar, recommend puttin it in a downey ball. So far I have not been able to find one in stores and read that it is because there is a fabric softner dispenser in most new washers. Can I pour the vingar in the softner dispenser?
