We were not advised to put cereal when DS was diagnosed with it. It may depend on the severity. I strongly recommend you do NOT do this until you see the doctor. You believe (not know) that he has reflux and it's not your job to diagnose your child. What you can do to help ease it (which the doc had told us to do) is to keep him upright for at least 30 min. after each feeding, don't have him sleep on his back, hold him more upright while feeding, don't lay him on his back soon after feeding, and burp him like there's no tomorrow.
I agree with pp. My dd has it pretty bad and never once did my pedi mention cereal. Incline is your best bet til you see your pedi. Do you have a rock n play? Life saver for us! What are your lo's symptoms?
We add 2-3 tsp's of rice cereal to LO's formula and I did notice a difference within a few days. My LO has silent acid reflux where the acid comes up but goes back down so I don't know if that makes a difference since he doesn't have projectile vomit or really bad spit up.
The nurses in the NICU tried this for my kids but it was a pain getting it to work well with the nipples. We switched to similac sensitive for spit up and that helped a lot. They are also on Prevacid.

Re: Rice Cereal for reflux?
I don't. We tried it with DS and it didn't help. I actually think it made his tummy hurt and constipated him.
When DD was diagnosed, we didn't even try. My pedi knew I wouldn't want to after DS.
Also, I don't know if you're bf'ing or ff'ing, but bm breaks down the cereal, so it really doesn't thicken anyway.
I also agree you shouldn't try it before you can talk to your pedi and do the other things the pp mentioned in the meantime.
