Has anyone started an indution with one of these and not needed pitocin?
The perinatologist suggested...er, well flat out said....that the reason so many inductions fail and require a csection is because they're performed half-assed (his words not mine). He said that giving pitocin and just hoping for the best is not the best way to induce.
That being said, I'm trying to find the closest to natural way to be induced.I'll be 39wks and a day- I'm 2cm dialated now and 38 weeks and 3 days, baby is low, Does it sound like cervidil could be enough to rev up my labor? I am having some very irregular contractions and lost my mucus plug after a very quick membrane sweeping a couple days ago (progress right?). He mentioned that breaking my waters and membrane stripping (which will actually happen the day before my induction as a last ditch effort to go on my own) will add to my sucess rate.
Point is I'd like to avoid pitocin and I'm wanting to hear your stories - either sucess or fail.
Re: Induction with cervidil or cyotek (srry 2nd post in a couple hrs)
Cervidil was a fail for me last time. After like 6 hours I got the Pitocin, little to no progress after terrible laboring. emergency c/s resulted at the 24 hour mark.
Any reason they can't wait until you keep progressing on your own? health risks? risks to LO?
i had cervical gel with DS1...two applications and went into labor with no other meds. 18 hours from first application to his birth.
i had no gel with ds2 but i did have pitocin (was going to have gel but when i went in i was 3cm and they immediately broke my water bringing me to 4cm).....9 hours from walking into the hospital to his birth.
The induction is because of her size...I know, I know...I swore I wouldn't cave, but when the perinatologist got involved (i landed in labor and delivery because the babys movements have slowed down a lot). He was very serious about her being born before she gets much bigger. I know all the stats...but in the end my husband and I trust my dr's. So I agreed to the induction.
I have never been induced. But a friend of mine was induced twice and both times they used cervidil and needed no pitocin. She had vaginal births both times (and her labors were shorter than mine).
In the past week I've had three doses (2 mg twice and 4 mg once) of Prostin, a different form of Cervidil, and I'm still not softened or dilated. I'm scheduled for Cytotec Monday night to encourage faster ripening, and the doctor has ordered Pitocin for Tuesday morning because she doesn't think the Cytotec will start labor on its own.
Some women do go into labor from the synthetic prostaglandins or Cytotec alone, but most don't, and there's no way to know which category you fall under. It really just depends on your body. If it's not ready, you can only do so much to try to encourage it.
