Induction with cervidil or cyotek (srry 2nd post in a couple hrs)

Has anyone started an indution with one of these and not needed pitocin?

The perinatologist suggested...er, well flat out said....that the reason so many inductions fail and require a csection is because they're performed half-assed (his words not mine).  He said that giving pitocin and just hoping for the best is not the best way to induce.

That being said, I'm trying to find the closest to natural way to be induced.I'll be 39wks and a day- I'm 2cm dialated now and 38 weeks and 3 days, baby is low,  Does it sound like cervidil could be enough to rev up my labor?  I am having some very irregular contractions and lost my mucus plug after a very quick membrane sweeping a couple days ago (progress right?). He mentioned that breaking my waters and membrane stripping (which will actually happen the day before my induction as a last ditch effort to go on my own) will add to my sucess rate.

Point is I'd like to avoid pitocin and I'm wanting to hear your stories - either sucess or fail.

  • In my research i just realized Cyotec is the one that's unsafe - so obviously I retract that particular part of my question.

  • I had some kind of gel applied to my cervix with my 2nd child (I forget the exact name). I was probably 3 cm or so and having very very very mild contractions, but was induced due to low fluid at 41w2d. The gel was applied about 4-4:30 p.m. and the baby was born just before 7 p.m. with no other meds needed. So it worked for me! The membrane sweeping might work too, though. That's what worked for my 1st child at about 3 cm and 41w.
  • Not sure which type of gel it was but I had it applied at 40w6d the day before my scheduled pitocin induction with my daughter (second baby) and wasn't even a fingertip dilated. That was at 5pm. I went home, ate dinner and went to bed feeling pretty normal aside from a few cramps but nothing that I hadn't been having for a few weeks prior at that point. I woke up just after midnight in full blown labour .. contractions every 2 mins. We left our house at 1am, got to the hospital at 1:12am, water broke as DH was running me through EMERG and she was born at 1:18am. I was exactly 7 days overdue at that point. Obviously the gel worked for me and no pitocin required. Just be prepared for a very fast labour just in case!

  • I was induced at 41w3d with some kind of cervical gel - not sure if it was cervadil or cytotec - I was supposed to go in for pit the next morning but I started having contractions about six hours later and ended up with really intense early labor that resulted in fetal distress and a c/s.  However, I was only a fingertip dilated and DD hadn't really dropped (I can already tell that this LO is sitting lower now than she did even at 41+ weeks) - it turned out her head was awkwardly positioned - so I think it was traumatic because my body wasn't prepared for labor and DD wasn't positioned to come out.

  • Cervidil was a fail for me last time. After like 6 hours I got the Pitocin, little to no progress after terrible laboring. emergency c/s resulted at the 24 hour mark.

Any reason they can't wait until you keep progressing on your own? health risks? risks to LO?

  • It all depends on your cervix for the induction...I had cytotec with DS and will be doing that again if needed with this pregnancy.  I only needed a little kick with pitocin...DD I was induced with only pitocin and that sucked big time without a working epidural.

  • i had cervical gel with DS1...two applications and went into labor with no other meds. 18 hours from first application to his birth.

i had no gel with ds2 but i did have pitocin (was going to have gel but when i went in i was 3cm and they immediately broke my water bringing me to 4cm).....9 hours from walking into the hospital to his birth.

The induction is because of her size...I know, I know...I swore I wouldn't cave, but when the perinatologist got involved (i landed in labor and delivery because the babys movements have slowed down a lot). He was very serious about her being born before she gets much bigger.  I know all the stats...but in the end my husband and I trust my dr's. So I agreed to the induction.

  • I have never been induced. But a friend of mine was induced twice and both times they used cervidil and needed no pitocin.  She had vaginal births both times (and her labors were shorter than mine).

  • In the past week I've had three doses (2 mg twice and 4 mg once) of Prostin, a different form of Cervidil, and I'm still not softened or dilated. I'm scheduled for Cytotec Monday night to encourage faster ripening, and the doctor has ordered Pitocin for Tuesday morning because she doesn't think the Cytotec will start labor on its own.

Some women do go into labor from the synthetic prostaglandins or Cytotec alone, but most don't, and there's no way to know which category you fall under. It really just depends on your body. If it's not ready, you can only do so much to try to encourage it.

  • I went the night before DD was born and they gave me 1/2 a cytotek pill.  I woke up about 2am with contractions so they did not have to give me anymore.  They did start me on pitocin around 9am to make the contractions more regular.  She was born a little after 2pm.  I was 9 days after EDD and 2 cm dilated 2 days before induction.  Hope this helps!
