Adoption

Successful Adoptions w/ Cancer

Hi all!

I am just wondering if there are any parents out there who had cancer and were still able to have a successful adoption.

My fear is that due to having such a life-altering illness that agencies won't even consider me as a potential parent, especially if it was so recent.

Thank you!

Re: Successful Adoptions w/ Cancer

  • I was diagnosed with cervical cancer 4 years ago, underwent treatment, and have had a clean bill of health since then. My doctor is also signing off on my health records (I needed a general physical). In addition, our SW said she did not anticipate it being a problem. If you are still undergoing treatment (especially chemo or radiation), I would see where there is some concern on the part of the agency and, if it were me, I would wait until the treatment is over. If, for some reason, there is some concern, have your oncologist write a letter to put in your file. If he/she is confident in your health, the agency and Birth parents should be too.

    Good luck!!!

  • I want to start by saying WOW! I am so happy to hear about your victory over that nightmare of an illness.

In 2007 I was pregnant with twins.  One twin was a partial molar pregnancy which causes cancer cells to cluster and fill the uterus and utimately causes the babies to pass away.  I had to have sugery and strict monitoring.  I was very fortunate that I never had to have chemo.  This type of cancer has a HIGH cure rate so none of the agencies seemed to care or even note that I had this issue.

I am guessing that you have had a different type of cancer and a much bigger battle with it.  My suggestion is to start contacting agencies and be up front about your diagnosis and sucess over cancer.  I know that a few international countries that will not work with you but others will.  I am sure that you would be a domestic adoption canidate.  Again I would start calling and talking to different agencies, this is where you will learn the most.  Come from the stand point that you had to be vigilant and strong to beat this illness and that will be helpful as a parent.  I think your experience is likely to have taught you tools that will make you an amazing parent!

GL wish I had more insight! :)

  • Google "Waiting Lisa." She had uterine cancer and a full hysterectomy, and brought home a baby boy last fall.
  • Thank you all for your replies! I feel like there is hope out there!

  • Hi... I am a cancer survivor x 3!  And I am barely able to write this coherently because I have two babies that I just got down for the night :)

Yes, cancer survivors can adopt.  I had a pretty gnarly diagnosis and battled 3+ times yet I am a mama thanks to adoption.  It can be done.

I could talk much more to this but I found that depending on your diagnosis and disease, domestic adoption is easier.  I really had my heart set on international adoption but there were too many unknowns for us to be comfortable proceeding.

I belong to a nice but small yahoo group that has many survivors that have pursued all sorts of adoption.  If you are interested in the link, let me know.
