Flying with LO solo

Thankgiving day I'll be flying with DD solo. I'm trying to decide if I'm going to wear DD, or buy an umbrella stroller. We have a city elite, but I have the feeling that its going to be too heavy for me to lift onto the screening belt while I have DD in hand. DH is driving so he'll have DD's car seat, so our snap n go is out also.

Has anyone flown solo with LO? What did you do?

Any req's for umbrella stollers that can be folded up with one hand?

  • I'd probably wear her if that's something she's used to doing now and is comfortable with.

Someone can lift the stroller for you onto the belt; I wouldn't worry about that.

  • I have flown alone with my daughter many times. I always wear her. Here is something I posted to another forum describing how I do it. Sorry that it is so long. I hope it helps.

I have flown with just A many times starting when she was 3 months old. I pack lightly for both of us in just my carry-on and a diaper bag. The first time we flew I brought the car seat with us and gate checked it. It was wet when we got to our destination. Most airlines will let you check the car seat for free. When we take it with us we put it in a car seat bag and check it ahead of time instead of gate checking it.*

To get through security-- since the TSA changes in November it is no longer okay to wear babies through security. You have to take them off and put the carrier through the x-ray machine. I always wear slip on shoes, I don't put shoes on A, and I make sure neither of us are wearing jackets prior to getting to security. I take two empty bins and place them on the belt before my luggage. I put my shoes and iPad in the second bin and then I take A off and put the carrier in the first bin, so that it is the first thing to come through on the other side. I then put her back on as I wait for the rest of my things to come through.

I bring books and small toys for A to play with. New (or new to us) toys work great because they hold her attention longer.

I don't usually use a cover or blanket when I nurse, but because of close quarters on a plane, I do usually bring a blanket, not to put over her head, but to drap over my arm for a little more privacy.

I try to pick my seat when I get my boarding pass online, so if the flight isn't full I can attempt to put us in a row by ourselves.

I always bring her birth certificate, but have never needed to present it. I have a friend who almost wasn't allowed to fly, since they didn't have it with them.

*if the flight isn't full you can bring the car seat on board and use it during the flight. I didn't do this when A was tiny, because I knew she would do better in arms. The last time we flew I borrowed a cares harness and put A on the seat next to me. We plan on doing this as well when she turns two and I have to buy her a seat.

  • I'd just wear her. Will your LO be big enough for an umbrella stroller? I was going to do that when I traveled with DD at 5mos, but she was not sitting up yet and not big enough for an umbrella. (We got a cheap one at BRU to try out).

  • I'm thinking she might be big enough. A month ago she was almost big enough for the main portion of the city elite. She currently sits pretty well on her own unassisted and by the time we fly she'll be 6 mo.

  • Matilda has a good routine- especially the shoes thing- I have had to take my kids Robeez off almost everytime we have flown- which I found ridiculous- I mean really?

While I haven't flown w/ either of mine solo, I took DD to NYC on the train solo and wore her when she was 5 or so months- I can't imagine having to lug a stroller around.

When the 4 of us fly, I still wear DS. I have an ergo w/ a diaper bag "attachment" so I can wear him and the diaper bag at the same time.

We took an admittedly crappy umbrella stroller w/ us to the Bahamas when DD was 10 or so months and ended up leaving the stroller there because it sucked and DD didn't really want to be in it anyway, it was easier just to wear her.

  • I thought about the shoes thing. But has anyone heard that they stopped that? I thought I heard the other day that they stopped making you take off shoes. Guess I'll have to look into that.

ETA: Guess not about the shoes. Just looked it up.

Nope, still wearing shoes.  They were going to cancel this but it's still yet to be seen.

EDITED - I just went through Cleveland and they had a sign for children under 12 can wear shoes now.  Here is the link for TSA - https://www.tsa.gov/what_we_do/screening_under12.shtm
