what kind of charitable or volunteer activity could I do w/ DD at 3 yo?

the holidays are making me think I'd like to work w/ DD on some kind of charitable or volunteer activity that will help her see a wider world and learn to help people.  She's huge helper now and loves to help me, DH, her friends and teachers, etc. so I'd like to find a way to channel that in an age appropriate way.  Any recommendations??  I know my SAHM friend did  a Meals on Wheels thing that was specifically for SAHMs w/ small kids, but I can't make that kind of time committment.

  • What a thoughtful thing for you to ask!

How about visiting a nursing home? She can maybe bring flowers or crafts to share with the people there. Or collect toys for tots or adopt a family. When I was younger my family adopted a family and I loved to help my mom shop for them and wrap the gifts.

  • DD and I are going shopping and will fill a shoe box for Samaritan's Purse.

We will probably also choose a local angel from the Salvation's Army tree to buy Christmas presents for.

  • When it was just me and DD- we delivered Meals on Wheels 2x a week. She looooooved it.

you don't need a time commitment- many places with MonW- will be more than happy to have you volunteer once

  • DS has 2 small piggy banks,  one for saving and one for charity. We give him change and he puts some into each one. When the save one is full, we take to the bank and he gets to use the automatic change counter, which he loves, and we deposit it into his savings account.

In December, we take the charity one and go to the bank to use the change counter, then go to the toy store. DS picks out a toy for "the other kid" and puts into a Toys for Tots collection bin.  We want to instill a sense of giving in him and at this age, this is about what he understands, that some other kids don't have toys.

  • We work with a local charity that is similar to MOW but for the terminally ill, and decorate the bags meals are served in on a regular basis.

We also work on making centerpieces for places that serve food to homeless / in need, since she can't work behind the scenes serving food. Then while we do the serving, she eats with grandma and the homeless folks.

The best thing for getting it into DDs head that she's got it good is workign with the Interfaith Hospitality Network. Our church hosts homeless families who live in the church during transition periods, and we cook and serve food, and eat with the families. She sees them and helps them set up their cots and sleep in a hall, and even at her young age, gets it.

  • I'm not sure what kind of Meals on Wheels thing your friend did, but I love getting the blank placemats that they use for the kids to decorate/color.  I originally did this with an office that I used to work at, which when it was first mentioned seemed like an odd thing for adults to do, but it was great and made a difference to someone (hopefully).  Now I find that it's the perfect activity to do with young kids, fits any schedule and can be broken up into small bits of time that fit short attention spans.
