Sesame Street Live & ASD

Would you take your 2.5 year old with autism to see Sesame Street Live? DS loves everything Elmo and Sesame Street, so I think he might like it. He's not overly sensitive to loud noise. If we got tickets, I'd probably try to get seats on the outside of the aisle, just in case. Then he could sit between me and DH.

I have trouble with these types of activities, because I want DS to be able to participate in fun things like this, like his NT peers. Its things like this that end up making me feel bad about having a SN child.

Re: Sesame Street Live & ASD

  • I would. I took DD1 to see Yo Gabba Gabba Live at about the same age.

She had no issues with it, except that she didn't want to go up to get in line and sit on Biz Markie's lap to make beat-box sounds. :) They dropped balloons and had a couple of confetti explosions, too, gave us paper glasses to wear, and of course it was loud, and none of it really fazed her. We were in like row four, too, so we were close to everything.

If anything, I thought she'd be super excited b/c she loved the show and it was kind of anti-climactic -- like, she wasn't any more enthused than if she'd been sitting on our couch. She liked it, but wasn't really excited. That was pre-dx for us, and her reaction was one of those things that made me feel like something was off.

  • Have you taken him to a movie? We tried a short movie (1 hour- Winnie the Pooh) and DS did great, although he was definitely a little bored by the end. I knew we'd be safe with Pooh because we have a DVD that he loves. I personally wouldn't try Seseme live yet just because DS prefers animation- he won't watch anything "real" except for Elmo episodes. He won't sit through Elmo in Grouchland because there are too many "real people" in it.  But that's just us. If you think your DS would like it you should go, but with the expectation that if he gets antsy you will get up and walk around, and just be there for the "experience".

No, we haven't taken him to a movie yet. I figured for the Sesame Street Live, the tickets are pretty cheap that if needed, we could just leave. I think I'm going to order the tickets today. DS really LOVES Elmo and Sesame Street. :-)

    Thanks for the responses!!!

  • We took ours (3yr old twins boys) a couple of months ago and they LOVED it! We prepared to leave early but we didn't need to, they were so happy. The stage was pretty closed to the seats and they had lights all over the place so my kids were in heaven.

I would take him. Have fun!

  • In your case, I'd try. Mine is very sensory-sensitive, but I'll still try. I know what you mean about missing out. Recently I was trying to pump DS up to go to some kid festival thing at a park and he said, "could you just take me to a different park with no music?" I hadn't even mentioned music, but he was one step ahead.
