What should we buy?

Okay so my aunt gave us a check for $75 and told us to get whatever we want/need still for baby or our home (just moved in) etc. (This isn't a shower gift or anything, just her being extremely generous) I don't know what to get with it though :/ I have a completion discount to target so I'm planning on getting whatever there. On our need/want before baby comes list is...

* My Brest Friend ($45)

* Nursing sleep bra ($16)

*Nursing tank - at least 1 ($18)

*Cloud B Giraffe Soother/Sound Machine ($20)

*Stand alone 3 shelf system ($16) Canvas Storage Bins ($13) This is our "changing organization station - we aren't using a changing table just our bed but have no where to keep diapers wipes etc. except the floor

Money is super tight for us and we need a bunch of little things too but those we can squeeze out of a paycheck... I just don't know which things to use this $75 for... is My brest friend a must have or do you think I could do without? Ik boppy is cheaper but I've heard it isn't good for bfing

OH and I also wanted to get one of the bebe au lait nursing covers ($35) -- I know people say covers are uneeded but I am far to uncordinated to use a blanket and I don't feel comfortable without one... and I don't want to have to ditch out and hide in a bedroom at holiday get togethers AND one of the seven slings... we have a baby bjorn but I feel like a sling is better for around the house, and I have a promotional code that would make it so we only have to pay shipping

Proud babywearing, breastfeeding, vaccinating SAHM of 2U2!

Re: What should we buy?

  • Have you looked at a consignment shop for any of those items?  i personally used my boppy for breastfeeding with no issues for about 3 weeks and then i didnt need support any konger as it just becomes second nature  however i did use the boppy until my son was about 7 months old for tummy time and to help prop him up when he began sitting on his own.  kind of like a protector in case he fell back etc.  i see them at consignment shops all the time though and they are machine washable so maybe you can go that route?  because i am anal i would get anything to help me organize first and foremost then the sleep bra and the rest i would keep my eyes open for something second hand.

  • I'm a FTM, so I don't have any experience yet, but my priorities would be the Breast Friend and a sound machine. I think you could probably work around not having nursing bras if money is tight, but easier feeding and longer sleep sessions will be more than worth their price tag!

  • I don't use a pillow for nursing except for a regular sleeping pillow. We did buy a boppy on consignment to help my older children with holding the baby.

    I also found a nursing cover at Target for 11--much cheaper and it does the job.

    For a sound machine we use a cd player that we already have a cd of nature sounds or lullabies (easy to find at Target or Wal Mart).

    I'd buy the shelf system and baskets and then see what else you can get.

  • I have a Breast Friend and a Boppy and I have heard great things about both.  I know that you can also just use regular pillows, if that would stretch a buck for you.  You can also get a nursing cover from Target for about $10 or so, and they work just fine.  I got one for my shower.  You don't need something fancy--just one that's apron like to cover.  (Trust me--I get it about the coordination thing - ha ha).  The sound machine would be fine to buy, too...I think something like that is necessary.  There is the Sleep Sheep or a mobile...there are also turtles that are about $15-$20 that make sounds and have little lights that project on the ceiling.  That may be a better option.  Good luck!

  • If money is tight, you can do without a BFing pillow...regular pillows work just fine with a little maneuvering.  And once DD got a little older we did a lot of side lying nursing anyways.

    We also never had a sound machine for DD--so I don't think that is a necessity either.

    I'd get a nursing tank--and you can skip the sleep bra--it's not necessary to wear a bra to sleep...if you find yourself leaking you can put a towel under you.

    You can also watch babysteals.com for a nursing cover...or get one of the cheaper ones at target.

  • I thought I wanted a Brest Friend, but then, after trying it on, I found it super uncomfortable and bulky.  Right now, I just breastfeed with regular pillows, but I do have a boppy that is great for propping up baby and tummy time.  And as PP said, get the cheaper cover.  No one is going to be looking and admiring your cover, plus it is most certainly going to get dirty.  I would go for the nursing tank (I saw that Old Navy was having a sale on nursing shirts the other day) and the organizational system.
