Austin Babies

if you are 3 yrs older than a sibling...

do you remember your younger sibling being born, or anything about the new baby joining your family?  I'm interested to know if that is old enough to have formed some good memories of that time period.

I'm only 20 months older than my sister and I have no memory, but I'm hoping that older kiddos did.

  • I'm the baby of the family, but I totally remember my 3rd birthday party.  Why?  Because I had to poop SO bad and I couldn't find either one of my parents to take me to the potty since there was like 30 people there, so I had to poop in my pretty birthday panties and I was MORTIFIED.

Aw, that's so sad!  I remember having to poo in my pants (I was a little older, though, like 4 or 5) because we only had 1 bathroom in our ancient house growing up in NJ.  And it only had a tub, no shower.  My dad would fall asleep in the bath in the mornings, and one morning I had to go SO bad, and he had locked the door, fallen asleep (which I realize now - holy cow!  How dangerous!) and I couldn't get in.  I remember crying outside the door as I had to crouch down and do my bidnez in my panties.  Embarrassed

Anyway, good question, OP!  I wonder the same thing, and I can't help but think there's no WAY he'll forget, because he is so super aware of the pregnancy and so so excited about "his" baby coming, etc.  It would be sad if he didn't remember.  I'll have to do a very specific blog post about it, one of these days....

  • Yep, I remember my grandmother coming to babysit me and then taking me to the hospital to visit.  I remember that walk to the hospital from the parking lot but not anything else really.  And I vaguely remember them bringing my little sister home.  I was almost 3.5.

  • I'm 5 years older than my sister and I remember going to big sister classes and doing a tour of the nursery..and we got to learn how to put a diaper on a baby doll. Other than that, I don't really remember when she was born. I remember vacations and family get togethers from when my sister was a baby.
  • I'm 3 1/2 yrs older than my little brother, and I remember my parents bringing him home from the hospital for the first time. I thought he looked like a lightbulb. But that's it until months later.

  • I'm 3.5 yr older than my sister and i also remember the day she came home and my grandmother staying with us. I also remember My older sis and I coming up with names for her, mine was 'pillow.' :) and that's all I remember from the early baby days :)
  • wow, what a variety of answers - I guess it will depend on quite a few factors.  Thanks for all the replies!
  • I am 3 years older than my sister and 6 years older than my brother -- I definitely do NOT remember anything about my sister's infancy, and I scarcely remember bits from my brother's birth/infancy.
  • Yes.  I remember the baby got tons of presents and I didn't get any!  I was ticked!  (And that is seriously most of what I remember.)

  • I am three years and three days older than my brother. I don't remember much about my brother being born, but I do remember some of what happened when my mom and he were still at the hospital - stuff like my dad coming to get me at home early in the morning (I guess grandparents were watching me?) and stopping at a gas station on the way to the hospital and my dad buying me one of those little packages of chocolate donuts (a big treat for a three year old!!). I also remember going to the grocery store with my dad in the same time frame and choosing with him to purchase this little picture frame magnet for our fridge that was the right size for my brother's hospital portrait.I remember being seriously excited about getting a baby brother.

I don't actually remember my brother (other than being able to picture that portrait in my head, but I think that's just because it hung on our fridge for so long), the hospital, or any of that type of stuff at all - just the short bits of time with my dad. I think these are probably my earliest memories.

  • I'm 4.5 years older than my sister. I remember my parents dropping me off at my grandmothers house so they could go to the hospital to deliver. I was SO excited to find out if it was a brother or sister. My dad called and my told me over the phone it was a sister and I felt very special to know before grandma and that dad wanted to talk to me first. I also remember my grandmother letting me buy the baby a stuffed duck in the gift shop. I don't actually remember meeting her the first time though. From what my mom said, I was pretty nervous about the hospital room.

My favorite memory of sister as an infant is when her crying woke me up one night. I walked to my parents room and asked "can you PLEASE make her stop crying??" my mom (who I was exhausted, I'm sure) said "I would love to make the baby stop crying, but I'm not sure how". I could not comprehend that she couldn't know how to fix the baby.

I remember "helping" my Mom with my brother, and changing diapers, etc. That's about it, though. Granted, I have a horrible memory.
